The Ground Support Crew, often referred to as Ramp Agents or Aircraft Servicing Agents, are the logistical and operational backbone of airport tarmac activities. This role is fundamentally responsible for ensuring that aircraft are turned around safely, efficiently, and on schedule. From marshaling planes to their gates to handling baggage and cargo, the Ground Support Crew performs a wide range of critical tasks that are essential for the seamless flow of air travel. You are the hands-on team that connects the aircraft to the airport, playing a pivotal role in safety, punctuality, and the overall passenger experience before takeoff and after landing.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute precise aircraft marshaling using standardized hand signals to guide aircraft safely during arrival, positioning, and departure from the gate or parking stand.
  • Operate a diverse range of Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including aircraft tugs, belt loaders, baggage carts, and pushback tractors, with a strong emphasis on safety protocols.
  • Perform pushback and towing procedures to move aircraft between gates, remote parking areas, and maintenance hangars, coordinating closely with flight and ground crews.
  • Skillfully load, unload, and sort passenger baggage, air cargo, and company mail, ensuring proper distribution within the aircraft hold to maintain weight and balance integrity.
  • Connect and disconnect ground power units (GPU) and pre-conditioned air (PCA) units to the aircraft to provide power and climate control while at the gate.
  • Perform aircraft lavatory servicing and potable water replenishment in a sanitary and timely manner, adhering to all health and safety regulations.
  • Conduct comprehensive walk-around inspections of the aircraft upon arrival and before departure to identify and report any visible damage or safety concerns.
  • Place and remove chocks, cones, and safety barriers around the aircraft to secure its position and create a safe working zone on the ramp.
  • Communicate effectively with the flight deck, gate agents, and operations control center using two-way radios and established communication protocols.
  • Handle specialized cargo, including live animals, dangerous goods (HAZMAT), and high-value shipments, following all specific handling procedures and regulations.
  • Drive and operate vehicles and equipment in congested and high-stakes airport environments, demonstrating exceptional situational awareness and adherence to speed limits.
  • Ensure the security and integrity of baggage and cargo, preventing loss or damage through careful handling and transfer procedures between the terminal and aircraft.
  • Assist with aircraft de-icing and anti-icing procedures during winter operations to ensure airframe surfaces are free of contamination before flight.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly work environment on the ramp, in the bag room, and around GSE parking areas, removing any Foreign Object Debris (FOD).
  • Interpret and apply information from load plans and manifests to ensure baggage and cargo are loaded in the correct positions for optimal aircraft balance and performance.
  • Respond swiftly to and assist in the event of minor incidents or emergencies on the ramp, following established emergency response plans.
  • Adhere strictly to all company, airport, FAA, and TSA security and safety regulations to maintain a secure and compliant operational environment.
  • Document and report any equipment malfunctions or maintenance needs for Ground Support Equipment to ensure operational readiness and safety.
  • Participate in regular safety briefings, training sessions, and performance reviews to stay current on procedures and continuously improve job knowledge.
  • Provide assistance to passengers with mobility challenges, including the loading and unloading of personal wheelchairs and other assistive devices.

Secondary Functions

  • Conduct pre-use and post-use operational checks on all Ground Support Equipment to ensure it is in safe working condition.
  • Monitor ramp activities to identify and report any potential safety hazards or security breaches to the appropriate supervisor or authority.
  • Assist in the repositioning and staging of ground equipment to prepare for incoming flights and maintain an organized ramp environment.
  • Perform basic cleaning of aircraft cabins as required, including removing trash and tidying seatback pockets between flights.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent is required.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational/Technical Certificate in Aviation Technology or a related field.
  • Associate's Degree in Aviation Management.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2 years. This is frequently an entry-level position with on-the-job training provided.

Preferred: Previous experience in an outdoor, physically demanding job such as construction, warehousing, or landscaping is highly beneficial. Direct experience in an airport or aviation environment is a significant plus.
