Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely guide and marshal arriving and departing aircraft to and from the gate or parking positions using standardized international hand signals.
- Operate and maintain a variety of complex Ground Support Equipment (GSE), including baggage tugs, belt loaders, pushback tractors, and de-icing units.
- Perform rigorous pre-use operational checks on all GSE to ensure mechanical readiness and immediately report any malfunctions for repair.
- Meticulously load and unload passenger baggage, time-sensitive air cargo, and mail from aircraft holds, ensuring compliance with weight, balance, and security standards.
- Sort and transport baggage and freight between the terminal, baggage sorting facilities, and the aircraft with precision and a high sense of urgency.
- Execute aircraft servicing duties, including lavatory and potable water servicing, in strict accordance with health, safety, and environmental protocols.
- Expertly connect and disconnect ground power units (GPU), pre-conditioned air (PCA) hoses, and other essential ground services to the aircraft.
- Conduct detailed pre-departure and post-arrival walk-around inspections of the aircraft exterior to identify and report any obvious damage or hazards.
- Assist certified A&P Technicians with minor aircraft maintenance tasks, such as tire pressure checks, fluid replenishment, and component lubrication.
- Execute aircraft de-icing and anti-icing procedures during inclement weather, ensuring complete and even coverage according to fluid specifications and aircraft type.
- Maintain constant, clear communication with the flight deck, gate agents, and ramp control tower via radio headsets to ensure seamless and coordinated operations.
- Proactively scan and maintain a clean ramp area, ensuring it is free of Foreign Object Debris (FOD) to prevent potential damage to aircraft engines and tires.
- Position and remove wheel chocks, safety cones, and wing-walk guides around the aircraft to establish and maintain a safe operational footprint.
- Drive company vehicles and equipment safely and efficiently between maintenance hangars, storage facilities, and the active ramp area.
- Adhere with unwavering commitment to all company, airport authority, and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) safety regulations and operational procedures.
- Actively participate in mandatory safety briefings, recurrent training programs, and emergency response drills to maintain peak proficiency and readiness.
- Document all servicing tasks, equipment usage, and maintenance activities accurately and legibly in official maintenance logs or digital tracking systems.
- Assist with aircraft pushback, repositioning, and towing operations under the direct supervision of a qualified lead or technician.
- Operate passenger boarding bridges and mobile air stairs, ensuring a safe, secure, and level connection to the aircraft for passenger and crew movement.
- Monitor all ramp activities with a high degree of situational awareness to ensure the safety of all personnel, aircraft, and equipment in the vicinity.
- Properly handle, segregate, and transport hazardous materials and dangerous goods according to IATA and DOT regulations.
- Support overnight aircraft parking procedures, including securing the aircraft, connecting overnight power, and preparing it for the next day's flight schedule.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in maintaining inventory levels of ground support supplies, such as de-icing fluid and lavatory chemicals, and report shortages.
- Participate in team meetings to discuss operational challenges, safety concerns, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Help maintain the cleanliness and organization of GSE storage areas, maintenance break rooms, and supply closets.
- Provide support to other ground handling teams, such as fueling or cabin services, as directed during irregular operations or peak demand.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license with a clean and insurable driving record.
- Ability to successfully pass a comprehensive background check to obtain and maintain an airport security badge (SIDA).
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude for inspecting equipment and assisting with minor maintenance tasks.
- Proficiency in operating or the ability to quickly learn to operate complex Ground Support Equipment (GSE).
- Familiarity with basic aviation terminology and standard radio communication etiquette.
- Working knowledge of, or ability to learn, FAA, TSA, and airport-specific safety regulations.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations for weight and balance considerations.
