This role requires a proactive and skilled Grounds Associate to join our team and serve as a steward of our property's first impression. In this vital role, you will be responsible for the complete care and maintenance of all exterior grounds, including lawns, gardens, athletic fields, and hardscapes. You will perform a wide variety of horticultural and maintenance tasks to ensure our outdoor environment is not only beautiful and welcoming but also safe and functional for all employees, visitors, and clients. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute comprehensive turf management programs, including mowing, line trimming, edging, and blowing of all grass areas to maintain a pristine and uniform appearance.
  • Perform detailed horticultural tasks such as planting, watering, weeding, mulching, and fertilizing flower beds, trees, and shrubs to promote healthy growth and vibrant displays.
  • Prune and trim trees, hedges, and shrubs according to best practices to shape them, improve their health, and remove dead or hazardous branches.
  • Operate a wide range of grounds maintenance equipment, including commercial zero-turn mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, aerators, leaf blowers, and chainsaws, in a safe and proficient manner.
  • Monitor, maintain, and perform minor repairs on irrigation systems, including sprinklers, heads, valves, and controllers, to ensure efficient water distribution and conservation.
  • Identify and control plant diseases, pests, and noxious weeds using integrated pest management (IPM) techniques and the safe application of herbicides and pesticides.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of all outdoor areas by removing trash, debris, and leaf litter from lawns, walkways, parking lots, and common areas.
  • Perform seasonal landscape duties, such as spring cleanup and bed preparation, summer planting, fall leaf removal, and winterization of plant material and irrigation systems.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the grounds to identify and proactively address potential safety hazards, maintenance needs, or areas for aesthetic improvement.
  • Assist in the design and installation of new landscape features, including flower beds, pathways, and other softscape and hardscape elements.
  • Maintain hardscape surfaces, including sidewalks, patios, and parking lots, by performing pressure washing, minor crack repair, and sweeping.
  • Prepare and maintain athletic fields or specialized turf areas as required, including lining, dragging, and ensuring proper playing conditions.
  • Execute snow and ice removal operations during winter months, which may include shoveling, blowing snow, and applying de-icing agents to walkways and entrances, often outside of normal business hours.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on all groundskeeping tools and equipment, including blade sharpening, oil changes, and cleaning, to ensure operational readiness and longevity.
  • Document and report on completed work, potential issues, and inventory levels of supplies like fertilizer, mulch, and chemicals.
  • Support campus or facility events by assisting with the setup and breakdown of outdoor furniture, tents, and other necessary equipment.
  • Collaborate with other facilities and maintenance staff on larger projects and provide support to other departments as needed.
  • Adhere to all company and governmental safety policies and procedures, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to stay current with industry best practices in horticulture, safety, and equipment operation.
  • Provide friendly and professional assistance to clients, visitors, or staff regarding questions about the property grounds.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Horticultural Knowledge: Strong understanding of plant identification, soil science, and the specific needs of various trees, shrubs, and perennials.
  • Landscaping Equipment Operation: Proficiency in safely operating commercial-grade equipment such as zero-turn mowers, tractors, aerators, tillers, chainsaws, and trimmers.
  • Irrigation System Management: Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and perform basic repairs on sprinkler systems, drip lines, and irrigation controllers.
  • Pest & Disease Identification: Knowledge of common landscape pests and diseases and familiarity with Integrated Pest Management (IPM) principles.
  • Safe Chemical Application: Experience and/or certification in the proper and safe handling, mixing, and application of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides.
  • Small Engine Maintenance: Basic mechanical skills to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on groundskeeping equipment.
  • Snow Removal Operations: Experience operating snow blowers, plows, and applying de-icing materials effectively and safely.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree in Horticulture, Landscape Design, Turfgrass Management, or a related discipline.
  • State-issued pesticide/herbicide applicator's license.

  • Demonstrable experience with both installing and maintaining irrigation systems.
