Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise, train, and coordinate the daily activities of groundskeeping staff, assigning specific tasks for mowing, pruning, planting, and general landscape maintenance to ensure work quality and productivity.
- Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive, year-round grounds maintenance plan, including detailed schedules for fertilization, pest and weed control, aeration, and overseeding for all turf and ornamental areas.
- Operate and provide expert-level training on a wide array of heavy and light grounds equipment, including commercial mowers, tractors, loaders, backhoes, trenchers, aerators, and snow removal vehicles.
- Oversee the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex irrigation systems to ensure efficient water distribution and conservation.
- Plan and lead landscape enhancement and construction projects, such as planting trees and shrubs, installing sod, building retaining walls, and creating new garden beds.
- Ensure the safe and compliant application of all pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers, maintaining requisite certifications (e.g., Certified Pesticide Applicator) and meticulous application records.
- Implement and rigorously enforce all safety protocols and procedures for grounds operations, conducting regular safety meetings and ensuring staff use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Lead all snow and ice removal operations, which includes creating staff schedules for 24/7 coverage, operating plows and de-icing equipment, and ensuring all walkways, parking lots, and access roads are safe.
- Conduct frequent and thorough inspections of all property grounds, athletic fields, and hardscapes to identify maintenance needs, potential liabilities, and opportunities for aesthetic improvement.
- Perform and guide the team in advanced horticultural duties, including proper pruning techniques for trees and shrubs, diagnosing plant diseases, and managing insect infestations.
- Manage inventory of all grounds-related supplies, tools, and equipment, and procure new items as needed while adhering to budget constraints.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of daily work, equipment maintenance, chemical applications, staff hours, and project progress.
- Participate in the recruitment, interviewing, and hiring process for new grounds personnel and conduct regular performance reviews for the existing team.
- Provide hands-on assistance to the grounds crew as needed to ensure timely completion of tasks and to lead by example.
Secondary Functions
- Contribute to the development of the annual grounds department budget, track expenditures, and provide justification for capital equipment requests.
- Collaborate effectively with other department managers (e.g., Athletics, Facilities, Events) to coordinate grounds support for special events and projects.

- Ensure all hardscape elements, including sidewalks, curbs, parking lots, benches, and fences, are kept clean, safe, and in good repair.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Advanced Horticultural Knowledge: Deep understanding of plant identification, soil science, pruning standards, and pest/disease diagnosis and treatment.
- Turfgrass Management: Expertise in cultivating and maintaining high-quality turf, especially for athletic fields, including aeration, fertilization, and disease control.

Experience Requirements
