Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive turf management, including precision mowing, edging, and trimming of lawns, athletic fields, and common areas to maintain a neat and professional appearance.
  • Execute detailed landscaping duties, which include planting new flowers, shrubs, and trees, as well as weeding, mulching, and cultivating garden beds to enhance visual appeal.
  • Conduct regular pruning and trimming of trees, hedges, and shrubs to ensure their health, shape, and to prevent obstruction of walkways and sightlines.
  • Operate a wide variety of powered landscaping equipment such as commercial-grade mowers (riding and push), string trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, and hedge trimmers with a focus on safety and efficiency.
  • Implement integrated pest management strategies, including the proper and safe application of fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides to control weeds, insects, and plant diseases.
  • Maintain and monitor irrigation systems, performing routine inspections, adjustments, and minor repairs to sprinkler heads, lines, and controllers to ensure optimal water distribution.
  • Proactively patrol grounds to identify and remove litter, trash, and natural debris from lawns, walkways, parking lots, and public areas to maintain a clean environment.
  • Perform seasonal cleanup tasks, including the collection and removal of fallen leaves in the autumn and comprehensive spring-cleaning of grounds to prepare for new growth.
  • Execute snow and ice removal operations during winter months, utilizing shovels, snow blowers, plows, and applying salt or de-icing agents to ensure safe passage on sidewalks, steps, and parking lots.
  • Prepare soil for new plantings through tilling, amending, and grading, and perform turf aeration and dethatching to promote healthy root growth.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and safety of hardscape surfaces, including walkways, patios, retaining walls, and parking areas, by pressure washing, sweeping, and performing minor repairs.
  • Inspect the property for potential safety hazards, such as broken branches, uneven pavement, or drainage issues, and report them to a supervisor for prompt resolution.
  • Assist in the installation of new landscape features, which may include laying sod, building small retaining walls, or setting up landscape lighting.
  • Provide grounds support for special events, including site preparation, setup of outdoor furniture or tents, and post-event cleanup.
  • Maintain detailed logs and records of daily activities, including tasks completed, materials used, and any equipment malfunctions or safety concerns.

Secondary Functions

  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on all groundskeeping equipment, including cleaning, changing oil, sharpening blades, and checking fluid levels to ensure longevity and safe operation.
  • Assist other maintenance or facilities departments with general labor tasks, moving furniture, or event setup as directed by a supervisor.
  • Operate light-duty vehicles such as utility carts and pickup trucks for transporting tools, materials, and debris across the property.
  • Monitor and report on the inventory of landscaping supplies, tools, and materials, notifying the supervisor when new orders are needed.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of sustainable landscaping practices, such as composting, water conservation, and planting native species.
  • Respond to emergency situations on the grounds, such as storm damage cleanup, fallen trees, or irrigation system failures, often outside of normal working hours.
  • Install and maintain site furnishings, including benches, trash receptacles, and signage, ensuring they are secure and in good condition.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Power Equipment Operation: Proficient and safe operation of commercial lawn mowers, string trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, chainsaws, and snow removal equipment.
  • Horticultural Knowledge: Strong understanding of plant identification, proper planting techniques, pruning methods, and the needs of various types of turf, trees, and shrubs.
  • Irrigation System Maintenance: Ability to perform basic repairs, adjustments, and diagnostics on sprinkler systems, including heads, valves, and timers.
  • Chemical Application: Knowledge of the safe and effective application of fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Small Engine Repair: Basic mechanical aptitude for performing routine maintenance and minor repairs on groundskeeping equipment.
  • Safe Work Practices: In-depth knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with grounds maintenance work.
  • Athletic Field Maintenance: Experience with marking, dragging, and maintaining sports fields (baseball, soccer, etc.) is highly desirable.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • State-issued pesticide/herbicide applicator's license.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of professional experience in commercial or institutional grounds maintenance, landscaping, or a closely related field.

Preferred: 3+ years of progressive experience, particularly in a large-scale environment such as a university campus, corporate park, golf course, or municipality. Demonstrated experience leading small crews is a plus.
