Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repairs on a wide range of gasoline, diesel, and electric-powered grounds maintenance equipment, including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, trimmers, and blowers.
  • Execute a detailed preventive maintenance program, including oil changes, lubrication, filter replacements, and system checks, to maximize equipment lifespan and minimize operational downtime.
  • Conduct precision grinding, sharpening, and adjustments of cutting units, such as reel and rotary mowers, to ensure a high-quality cut and pristine turf conditions.
  • Troubleshoot and repair complex hydraulic and hydrostatic systems, including pumps, motors, valves, and hoses, ensuring proper and safe operation.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues within electrical systems, including wiring, alternators, starters, and battery circuits, utilizing multimeters and modern diagnostic tools.
  • Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all maintenance activities, repairs, parts inventory, and associated costs using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
  • Manage the inventory of spare parts, tires, and supplies, sourcing from vendors and processing purchase orders to ensure critical components are readily available.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication tasks using MIG, TIG, or stick welders to repair or modify equipment and attachments as needed.
  • Ensure all equipment complies with organizational and governmental safety standards, conducting regular safety inspections and making necessary corrections.
  • Respond promptly to in-field equipment breakdowns, performing on-site diagnostics and repairs to return machinery to service with minimal operational disruption.
  • Rebuild and overhaul engines, transmissions, drivetrains, and other major components to extend the useful life of capital equipment.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to grounds staff on the proper and safe operation, daily checks, and minor maintenance of their assigned equipment.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, ensuring all tools, equipment, and service bays are properly stored and maintained.
  • Assist in the evaluation and recommendation of new equipment purchases based on performance, durability, total cost of ownership, and maintenance requirements.
  • Set up and calibrate specialized equipment, such as aerators, topdressers, and sprayers, to meet specific agronomic or landscaping requirements.
  • Read and interpret technical manuals, manufacturer service bulletins, schematics, and blueprints to effectively diagnose and complete complex repairs.
  • Manage the safe storage and disposal of hazardous materials like used oil, antifreeze, and solvents in accordance with environmental regulations.
  • Implement and oversee a comprehensive tire maintenance program, including inspections for wear and damage, repairs, and replacements for the entire equipment fleet.
  • Keep abreast of the latest industry trends, technologies, and repair techniques for turf and grounds equipment through continuous learning and professional development.
  • Support capital budget planning by providing data and recommendations on equipment replacement cycles and projected major repair costs.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist groundskeeping crews with operational tasks during peak seasons, significant weather events, or staffing shortages.
  • Participate in snow and ice removal operations, which may include operating plows and spreaders or performing emergency repairs on associated equipment.
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of shop safety protocols and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Provide logistical and mechanical support for special projects and campus events by ensuring all required equipment is prepared, staged, and functioning correctly.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing 2-cycle and 4-cycle small gasoline engines.
  • Strong knowledge of diesel engine mechanics, including fuel systems, turbochargers, and emissions controls.
  • Advanced troubleshooting skills for hydraulic and hydrostatic drive systems.
  • Expertise in reel and bedknife grinding (both spin and relief grinding), setting, and general cutting unit maintenance.
  • Competency in diagnosing and repairing 12/24-volt electrical systems and electronic controls.
  • Skill in metal fabrication, including MIG and/or stick welding for equipment repair and modification.
  • Ability to read and interpret complex technical manuals, hydraulic schematics, and electrical wiring diagrams.
  • Experience with major turf equipment brands such as Toro, John Deere, Jacobsen, and Kubota.
  • Proficiency with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) for work order and inventory tracking.
  • Knowledge of modern diagnostic software and tools for engine and equipment analysis.
  • Experience with lapping techniques for precision cutting units.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Associate's degree or a technical certificate from a vocational school in a relevant field.
  • Manufacturer-specific certifications (e.g., Toro, John Deere) or EETC (Equipment & Engine Training Council) certifications are highly desirable.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-5+ years of direct experience repairing and maintaining landscaping, golf course, or agricultural equipment.

Preferred: Experience as a grounds mechanic, golf course mechanic, or turf equipment technician in a large-scale setting such as a golf club, university campus, municipality, or large commercial landscaping company is highly desirable.
