Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Design and choreograph dynamic, engaging, and progressive group exercise classes that align with brand standards and cater to a variety of fitness levels and goals.
- Instruct participants through a comprehensive workout, clearly demonstrating all exercises and movements while providing detailed explanations of proper form, technique, and safety cues.
- Offer and explain a range of modifications and progressions for exercises to ensure all members, from beginners to advanced athletes, can participate safely and effectively.
- Curate and prepare high-energy, motivating music playlists appropriate for the class format and tempo, ensuring a seamless and immersive workout experience.
- Cultivate a positive, inclusive, and high-energy class environment where all members feel welcome, supported, and motivated to push their limits.
- Arrive at the studio well in advance of scheduled class times to prepare the space, set up necessary equipment, and greet members as they arrive to build rapport.
- Actively engage with members before and after class, answering questions, providing fitness advice, and fostering a strong sense of community and connection.
- Continuously monitor participants during the class to ensure safe execution of movements, providing immediate individual corrections and positive reinforcement.
- Stay current with the latest fitness industry trends, exercise science research, and new class formats to continuously enhance your teaching skills and class offerings.
- Promote your classes, along with other studio programs and special events, through social media and direct member interaction to drive attendance and engagement.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized studio environment by ensuring all equipment is properly used, sanitized, and returned to its designated storage area after each class.
- Accurately track class attendance records and report any member feedback, equipment issues, or facility concerns to the Group Fitness Manager in a timely manner.
- Respond professionally and effectively to any participant injuries or medical emergencies, adhering to established safety protocols and utilizing CPR/AED skills as required.
- Represent the brand with professionalism and a positive attitude at all times, serving as a role model for a healthy and active lifestyle.
- Proactively seek and secure substitute instructors from the approved list for any planned absences to ensure uninterrupted class schedules for members.
- Attend mandatory staff meetings, professional development workshops, and team-building events to stay aligned with company objectives and enhance your skills.
- Develop a loyal following by consistently delivering high-quality, memorable class experiences that inspire members to return week after week.
- Provide clear, concise, and motivational verbal cues timed effectively with the music and movements to guide participants through the entire workout.
- Educate members on the "why" behind the exercises, explaining the muscles being worked and the benefits of specific movements to deepen their understanding of fitness.
- Adapt class plans on the fly based on the energy of the room, participant needs, or unexpected circumstances, demonstrating flexibility and quick thinking.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in studio-wide promotional activities, member appreciation events, and community outreach programs to increase brand visibility.
- Contribute to the gym's social media presence by providing photos, videos, or fitness tips for marketing and member engagement.
- Provide support on the general fitness floor, assisting members with equipment or answering general fitness questions when not teaching.
- Mentor new instructors, offering guidance and feedback to help them acclimate to the studio's standards and culture.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Nationally recognized Group Fitness Certification (e.g., ACE, AFAA, NASM, ACSM).
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification from a recognized provider (e.g., American Red Cross, American Heart Association).
- Specialty certification in the specific format being taught (e.g., Les Mills, Zumba®, Spinning®, Yoga RYT 200, Pilates).
- Proficiency in class design, including music theory, tempo, and choreography for various formats.
- Deep understanding of human anatomy, kinesiology, and exercise physiology.
- Ability to demonstrate proper exercise form and technique for a wide range of movements.
- Skilled in providing clear and effective verbal and non-verbal cueing techniques.
- Knowledge of injury prevention strategies and the ability to provide safe exercise modifications.
- Competency in using various fitness equipment, including weights, resistance bands, stability balls, and indoor cycling bikes.
- Basic technical skills for managing music and microphone equipment.

Education & Experience
Educational Background
Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent.

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience leading group fitness classes in a commercial gym or studio setting.
Preferred: Demonstrated track record of building and retaining a strong class following and contributing to member retention.
