Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Execute the precise shaping and carving of guitar necks from wood blanks to specific profiles and dimensions using a combination of hand tools, shapers, and sanding equipment.
Perform multi-stage, detailed sanding of guitar bodies and necks through various grits to achieve a perfectly smooth, flawless surface prepared for the finishing process.
Skillfully install and fit various types of binding and purfling on guitar bodies and fretboards, ensuring clean lines and seamless joints.
Conduct intricate fretwork, including pressing or hammering frets, ensuring they are perfectly seated, level, crowned, and polished for optimal playability and buzz-free performance.
Assemble guitar bodies and necks, ensuring a perfect neck-pocket fit and precise alignment to guarantee structural integrity and proper string action.
Operate and maintain a variety of woodworking machinery safely and effectively, including table saws, band saws, jointers, planers, and routing stations.
Apply various types of finishes, such as nitrocellulose lacquer or polyurethane, using professional spray equipment to build even, durable, and aesthetically pleasing coats.
Perform wet sanding and high-speed buffing on finished instruments to achieve a high-gloss, mirror-like shine or a specified satin texture, free of imperfections.
Install, wire, and solder electronic components including pickups, potentiometers, switches, and jacks according to schematics, ensuring clean connections and proper function.
Mount and precisely align hardware such as bridges, tuning machines, strap buttons, and pickguards, ensuring correct placement for intonation and performance.
Execute the final setup process on each guitar, including adjusting the truss rod, setting string height (action), cutting nut slots, and calibrating intonation for peak playability.
Conduct rigorous quality control inspections at multiple stages of the build process, identifying and correcting any defects in materials or craftsmanship.
Utilize a variety of specialized hand tools, such as chisels, planes, scrapers, and files, with a high degree of skill and precision for detailed woodworking tasks.
Select and grade raw tonewoods and materials, identifying the best pieces for specific parts of the instrument based on grain, weight, and acoustic potential.
Create, maintain, and refine jigs, fixtures, and templates to ensure consistency, accuracy, and efficiency throughout the production process.
Manage workflow and time effectively to meet individual and team production targets and deadlines without compromising the standard of quality.
Perform delicate and detailed inlay work on fretboards, headstocks, and bodies using materials like mother of pearl, abalone, or synthetic alternatives.
Join and glue wooden components, such as body halves or top plates, using appropriate clamping techniques to create strong, resonant, and durable bonds.
Participate in the final play-testing of instruments, providing critical feedback on feel, tone, and overall performance before the instrument is approved for shipping.

Secondary Functions

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe personal workspace and contribute to the overall tidiness and safety of the workshop.
Document build processes, material usage, and quality control checks to support continuous improvement and production tracking.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Advanced Woodworking: Mastery of both hand tools (chisels, planes, scrapers) and power tools (routers, sanders, saws) with a deep understanding of wood characteristics.
Fretwork Precision: The ability to perform all aspects of fretting, including leveling, crowning, and polishing to a professional standard.
Finishing and Buffing: Experience with spray application of lacquers and polyurethanes, as well as multi-stage sanding and buffing to achieve a flawless finish.
