Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct comprehensive, one-on-one consultations with musicians to understand their playing style, physical ergonomics, tonal preferences, and specific goals for their instrument.
- Perform high-precision setups on electric, acoustic, and bass guitars, including truss rod adjustments, setting action and radius, and precise intonation.
- Execute expert fretwork, including fret leveling, crowning, and polishing to ensure buzz-free playability and a smooth feel across the entire neck.
e of - Perform complete refrets, including removal of old frets, conditioning the fretboard, installing new frets, and finishing them to exacting standards.
- Hand-carve, slot, and fit nuts and saddles from various materials (e.g., bone, Tusq, brass) to optimize string spacing, action, and tonal transfer.
- Install, upgrade, and troubleshoot a wide range of guitar electronics, including pickups, potentiometers, switches, capacitors, and output jacks.
- Perform complex custom wiring modifications, such as coil-splitting, phase-switching, and series/parallel configurations, based on player requirements.
- Advise clients on the tonal and performance characteristics of different pickups, hardware, and electronic components to help them achieve their desired sound.
- Diagnose and perform structural repairs, including crack sealing, brace re-gluing, and minor headstock or neck joint stabilization.
- Install and upgrade hardware components, such as tuning machines, bridges, tremolo systems, and strap-locks, ensuring perfect fit and function.
- Assess and provide detailed, accurate quotes and estimated timelines for all recommended work, from basic setups to extensive modifications.
- Maintain meticulous records of all work performed on client instruments, including specifications, parts used, and customer preferences for future reference.
Secondary Functions
- Perform finish touch-ups and drop-fills for minor cosmetic blemishes, scratches, and dings.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment, ensuring all tools and machinery are in excellent working condition.
- Manage the inventory of spare parts, strings, and lutherie supplies, placing orders as needed to prevent work delays.
- Calibrate and maintain specialized lutherie tools and machinery to ensure consistent, high-quality results.
- Educate customers on proper instrument care and maintenance techniques to preserve the longevity and playability of their guitars.
- Perform quality control inspections on new and incoming used inventory to identify any potential setup or structural issues.
- Stay current with the latest industry trends, lutherie techniques, new products, and tools through continuous learning and professional development.
- Assist the retail team with technical questions and support high-value sales by articulating the quality and condition of instruments.
