Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Assist with the selection, grading, and preparation of raw tonewoods, ensuring materials meet strict quality and moisture content standards for acoustic and electric instrument construction.
Operate and maintain a variety of woodworking machinery, including bandsaws, jointers, planers, and drum sanders, for the rough milling and dimensioning of lumber for bodies, necks, and tops.
Execute precise shaping and carving of guitar necks using spokeshaves, rasps, and sanding blocks to match specific profiles and ensure ergonomic playability.
Perform meticulous sanding of guitar bodies, necks, and other components through progressively finer grits to achieve a flawless surface, preparing the instrument for the finishing process.
Assist in the critical process of binding installation, carefully routing channels and fitting plastic or wood binding to protect edges and enhance aesthetic appeal.
Under supervision, operate CNC machinery for routing pickup cavities, neck pockets, and control cavities, ensuring adherence to precise digital specifications.
Support the fretwork process by cutting fret slots, pressing or hammering frets, and assisting with the initial leveling and dressing to create a perfect playing surface.
Participate in the assembly of guitar bodies and the fitting of necks to bodies, ensuring a tight, structurally sound joint that maximizes sustain and tonal transfer.
Prepare instruments for finishing by applying grain filler, sealer coats, and performing intermediate sanding between finish applications.
Learn and apply various finishing techniques, including spraying lacquer, oil finishes, or other coatings under the guidance of a senior luthier.
Install hardware components such as tuning machines, bridges, strap buttons, and string trees with precision, ensuring proper alignment and function.
Solder and install electronic components, including pickups, potentiometers, switches, and jacks, following wiring diagrams accurately.
Perform final assembly tasks, including stringing the instrument and conducting initial setup adjustments to action, intonation, and neck relief.
Contribute to the creation of jigs and fixtures that improve the accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency of various building processes.

Secondary Functions

Maintain a clean, organized, and safe workshop environment by cleaning workstations, organizing tools, and properly disposing of wood waste and other materials.
Assist in managing inventory of raw materials, parts, and consumables, notifying the workshop manager when supplies are running low.
Carefully package and prepare finished instruments for shipping, ensuring they are protected against damage during transit.
Perform routine maintenance on hand tools and power tools, including blade sharpening, lubrication, and calibration to ensure they are in optimal working condition.
