Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Execute daily, comprehensive maintenance routines including restringing, stretching strings, tuning, and intonation adjustments for a large collection of electric, acoustic, and bass guitars.
- Perform meticulous instrument setups tailored to artist specifications, including precise adjustments of truss rods, string action, pickup height, and tremolo systems.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and expertly repair a wide range of electronic issues in real-time, such as faulty wiring, noisy potentiometers, intermittent switches, and failing pickups, requiring advanced soldering skills.
- Manage, program, and maintain complex pedalboard and rack-based effects systems, ensuring signal chain integrity, clean power, and flawless MIDI-based patch changes.
- Act as the primary point of contact for the artist on stage, handling swift and seamless instrument changes between songs during live performances.
- Oversee the careful and systematic load-in, setup, and load-out of all guitar, bass, and amplifier-related equipment, ensuring its safety and security.
- Maintain a detailed and organized inventory of all instruments, amplifiers, cabinets, pedals, accessories, and spare parts, proactively managing stock levels and placing orders for necessary supplies.
- Collaborate directly with the artist during soundchecks and rehearsals to dial in tones and respond to any real-time requests for sound or feel adjustments.
- Conduct regular preventative maintenance and cleaning of all amplifiers, including tube testing and replacement, biasing, and cleaning of jacks and pots.
- Interface with Front of House (FOH) and Monitor engineers to troubleshoot and resolve any signal, level, or radio frequency interference issues.
- Prepare and pack instruments and equipment for transport, including air cargo and freight, adhering to carnets and international shipping best practices.
- Perform advanced luthier tasks as needed, such as fret leveling, crowning, and polishing, nut and saddle fabrication, and minor structural repairs.
- Manage and troubleshoot all wireless systems for guitars, ensuring clear frequencies and coordinating with the audio department to avoid interference.
- Stay current with the latest guitar technology, effects pedals, digital modelers, and amplification to recommend and implement rig upgrades.
- Archive and document all instrument settings, string gauge/tuning charts, and rig configurations for consistency across different tours and recording projects.
- Maintain the cosmetic condition of all instruments, performing regular cleaning, polishing, and minor finish touch-ups.
- Build, wire, and loom custom pedalboards and racks from the ground up, ensuring they are roadworthy, reliable, and easily serviceable.
- Set up and manage "B-rigs" or redundant systems to ensure a backup is always ready in case of a primary system failure.
- Provide technical support during recording sessions, which may include re-amping, mic placement assistance, and working with the recording engineer to capture the desired tones.
- Uphold a professional and discreet demeanor at all times, respecting the artist's privacy and creative space while on the road and in the studio.
- Handle administrative duties related to the backline department, such as managing receipts, budgets, and end-of-tour inventory reconciliation.

- Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis regarding equipment usage and failure rates.
- Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by documenting rig settings and repair logs.
- Collaborate with business units (production/tour management) to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
- Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team, re-contextualized as production meetings and tour logistics planning.
- Liaise with vendor and manufacturer representatives for artist endorsements, repairs, and procurement of new gear.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Advanced Luthierie & Guitar Repair: Expertise in fretwork (leveling, crowning, re-fretting), nut/saddle slotting and shaping, and structural repairs.
- Electronics & Soldering: Proficient in diagnosing and repairing guitar/amp electronics, with high-level soldering and desoldering skills.
- Amplifier Maintenance: Deep knowledge of tube and solid-state amplifiers, including tube biasing, troubleshooting, and component-level repair.
- Rig Design & Signal Flow: Ability to design, build, and troubleshoot complex signal chains involving multiple pedals, switchers, and effects loops.
- MIDI & Digital Systems Programming: Experience with programming MIDI controllers, digital modelers (Kemper, Axe-FX), and effects processors.
