As a Guitar Repair Assistant, you are the crucial support system for our senior luthiers and the first point of technical contact for our valued customers. This is a hands-on role where you will immerse yourself in the craft of instrument repair, from basic setups and string changes to assisting with complex structural and electronic work. You'll be responsible for the initial diagnosis of instrument issues, maintaining a clean and efficient workshop, and providing exceptional customer service. This position is an apprenticeship in essence, offering a unique opportunity to grow your skills and build a career in the professional luthiery and music retail industry. This role requires an individual who is not only technically inclined but also a great communicator, a problem-solver, and, most importantly, passionate about guitars.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute professional-grade setups on a wide variety of stringed instruments, including acoustic guitars, electric guitars, and basses, to meet precise customer or factory specifications. This includes truss rod adjustments, setting string action, and perfecting intonation.
  • Perform high-volume, quality restrings, ensuring proper winding techniques, string stretching, and a thorough cleaning and conditioning of the fretboard.
  • Conduct detailed fretwork, including fret leveling, crowning, and polishing to eliminate fret buzz, improve playability, and restore a smooth feel.
  • Assist senior technicians with more complex and delicate repairs, such as crack repairs, bridge reglues, neck resets, and finish touch-ups.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot a wide range of electronic issues, from simple output jack failures to complex wiring schemes and pickup-related problems.
  • Perform basic electronic repairs, including soldering connections, replacing potentiometers, switches, and installing new pickups.
  • Fabricate and fit new nuts and saddles from various materials like bone, graphite, and TUSQ, ensuring optimal string spacing, height, and tone transfer.
  • Handle the instrument intake process, carefully listening to customer concerns, inspecting the instrument for issues, and meticulously documenting all details in our work-order system.
  • Conduct final quality control inspections on all completed repairs, playing and testing each instrument to guarantee it meets our shop's high standards of excellence before customer pickup.
  • Communicate directly with customers to provide clear, understandable repair estimates, explain the necessary procedures, and provide timely status updates on their repairs.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and safety of the entire workshop, including benches, tools, and machinery.
  • Assist in managing the inventory of repair parts, strings, and shop supplies, alerting the Shop Manager to low stock and placing orders as needed.
  • Handle the secure packaging, shipping, and receiving of instruments for out-of-state repairs, ensuring they are protected against damage in transit.
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on workshop machinery, such as buffing wheels, drill presses, and belt sanders, adhering to all safety protocols.
  • Provide technical support and expertise to the retail sales team, helping them answer customer questions and ensuring floor models are in top playing condition.
  • Stay current with the latest repair techniques, tools, and product developments within the guitar industry by reading trade publications and engaging with the luthier community.
  • Carefully disassemble and reassemble instruments, ensuring all components are handled with a high degree of care and tracked meticulously.
  • Assist in the evaluation and appraisal of used or vintage instruments, learning to identify key features, conditions, and potential issues.
  • Support the team by performing general shop duties and assisting with ad-hoc projects as directed by the Head Technician or Shop Manager.
  • Document all work performed, including parts used and time spent, accurately within the service-tracking software for billing and historical record-keeping.
  • Provide post-repair advice to customers on proper instrument care and maintenance to help them keep their guitar in optimal condition.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficiency in performing comprehensive guitar and bass setups (truss rod, action, intonation).
  • Solid soldering skills and a fundamental understanding of guitar electronics and wiring diagrams.
  • Experience with fretwork, including leveling, crowning, and polishing.
  • Foundational woodworking skills and safe operation of hand tools, power tools, and workshop machinery.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot common hardware, structural, and electronic issues in stringed instruments.
  • Competency in shaping, fitting, and slotting nuts and saddles.
  • A strong understanding of the construction and mechanics of acoustic and electric guitars.
  • Knowledge of different guitar brands, models, and hardware types.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Diploma or certificate of completion from a recognized luthiery or guitar-making school (e.g., Roberto-Venn, Galloup School of Lutherie, Minnesota State College Southeast).

  • A portfolio of past repair or building work is highly encouraged.
