Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Proactively engage customers to understand their needs, providing expert advice and recommendations on firearms, optics, ammunition, and related accessories for various applications like hunting, sport shooting, and personal defense.
  • Execute all firearm sales transactions in strict compliance with all federal, state, and local laws, including the meticulous completion and verification of the ATF Form 4473.
  • Initiate and manage National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks for all potential firearm transferees, handling delays or denials with professionalism and according to established protocols.
  • Maintain the firearm "bound book" (Acquisition and Disposition records) with 100% accuracy, ensuring every firearm movement is logged in a timely and compliant manner.
  • Uphold the highest standards of firearm safety at all times, including proper handling, demonstration, and storage of all firearms within the department.
  • Assist in the receiving, logging, and secure storing of incoming firearm shipments, verifying serial numbers and quantities against shipping manifests.
  • Conduct regular inventory counts and audits of firearms and accessories to ensure inventory accuracy and prevent loss.
  • Merchandise the gun counter and surrounding areas, creating visually appealing displays that are clean, organized, and well-stocked to drive customer interest and sales.
  • Educate customers on the principles of safe gun handling, storage, transport, and cleaning, promoting responsible ownership with every interaction.
  • Skillfully mount, level, and bore-sight scopes and other optical accessories for customers, providing a value-added service that enhances their purchase.
  • Answer a wide range of technical customer questions regarding ballistics, firearm mechanics, compatibility of accessories, and manufacturer specifications.
  • Process special orders for customers seeking firearms or products not currently in stock, managing the process from order to customer pickup.
  • Handle firearm trade-ins by assessing condition, determining value, and completing all necessary acquisition paperwork.
  • Stay current on new products, industry trends, and changes in firearm legislation to serve as a credible and up-to-date resource for customers and the team.
  • Drive sales by upselling and cross-selling relevant products, such as cleaning kits, gun safes, ammunition, and range gear, to provide a complete solution for the customer.
  • Verify customer age and residency through proper identification for all firearm and ammunition purchases, denying sales when requirements are not met.
  • Ensure all firearms on display are properly secured with trigger locks or other security devices and that all department keys are strictly controlled.
  • Resolve customer service issues or complaints related to the firearms department efficiently and professionally, escalating to management when necessary.
  • Confidently and clearly explain the reasons for a denied or delayed transaction to a customer while maintaining a safe and calm environment.
  • Participate in and successfully complete all required company training on compliance, safety, and sales techniques.

Secondary Functions

  • Support overall store operations by assisting in other departments during peak traffic periods or as needed.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment by communicating effectively with colleagues and management.
  • Assist in setting up and tearing down promotional events, such as manufacturer demo days or special sales.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • ATF Compliance: Deep understanding of federal and state firearm laws, with specific expertise in executing ATF Form 4473 and NICS background checks without error.
  • Firearms Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of a wide range of firearm types (handguns, rifles, shotguns), actions, brands, and models.
  • Ammunition & Ballistics: Strong understanding of ammunition calibers, types, and their ballistic properties and applications.
  • Point of Sale (POS) Systems: Proficiency in operating retail POS systems for processing sales, returns, and special orders accurately.
  • Inventory Control: Experience with inventory management software and procedures for tracking serialized items.
  • Basic Gunsmithing: Practical skills in mounting scopes, changing out basic parts, and performing function checks on firearms.
  • Record Keeping: Meticulous ability to maintain accurate and compliant physical and digital records, particularly the A&D bound book.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a retail or direct customer service environment. Must be legally eligible to possess and sell firearms.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of prior experience working at a firearms counter or for a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL).
  • Demonstrable personal experience and passion for shooting sports, hunting, or firearm collecting.
  • Military or Law Enforcement background with extensive firearm experience.
