Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Provide expert, individualized consultation to customers regarding firearms, ammunition, and accessories, ensuring their selections match their needs, experience level, and intended use.
- Guide customers through the entire firearm purchasing process, clearly explaining each step with professionalism and patience.
- Meticulously and accurately process all state and federal transaction paperwork, including the ATF Form 4473, and conduct background checks through the NICS system.
- Maintain a deep and current knowledge of a wide array of firearm types, including handguns, rifles, and shotguns from various manufacturers.
- Uphold strict adherence to all Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) regulations as well as state and local laws governing the sale and transfer of firearms.
- Conduct daily and weekly audits of the firearms inventory, ensuring every piece is accounted for in the store's "bound book" or electronic A&D (Acquisition and Disposition) record.
- Handle and display firearms in a safe and responsible manner at all times, both on the sales floor and in storage areas.
- Assist in receiving, logging, and securely storing incoming firearm shipments from distributors and manufacturers.
- Prepare and process firearms for shipment, including customer transfers to other FFL holders, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
- Maintain the cleanliness, organization, and professional appearance of the gun counter, display cases, and surrounding sales floor.
- Perform basic gunsmithing services such as mounting scopes, installing sights, and performing detailed firearm cleanings for customers.
- Educate customers on the principles of firearm safety, responsible ownership, proper storage, and routine maintenance.
- Manage special orders for firearms and accessories, keeping customers informed on the status of their orders from placement to arrival.
- Proactively engage with customers to understand their needs, answer complex questions, and resolve any issues with a positive and helpful attitude.
- Stay informed about new products, industry trends, and changes in firearms legislation to serve as a reliable source of information.
- Assist in managing the inventory of ammunition, optics, holsters, and other related accessories, including restocking shelves and monitoring stock levels.
- Operate the Point of Sale (POS) system to process sales, returns, and exchanges efficiently and accurately.
- Identify and prevent potential "straw purchases" and other illegal transactions by remaining vigilant and knowledgeable about warning signs.
- Support range operations by assisting customers at the check-in counter and ensuring they have the appropriate safety gear and ammunition.
- Participate in ongoing product and compliance training sessions to continuously enhance job knowledge and professional skills.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in the general maintenance, cleanliness, and organization of the entire retail store, including backstock areas and employee spaces.
- Participate in store-wide physical inventory counts and contribute to the reconciliation of any discrepancies.
- Support sales associates in other departments, such as hunting, fishing, or apparel, during peak business hours or short-staffing situations.
- Contribute to the setup, execution, and breakdown of in-store promotional events, manufacturer demo days, and educational workshops.
