Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist head coaches in conducting engaging and structured gymnastics classes for various age groups and skill levels, from preschool to pre-team.
  • Actively and vigilantly spot gymnasts during skills practice, providing physical support and guidance to ensure their safety and prevent injuries on all apparatus.
  • Demonstrate fundamental gymnastics skills and proper techniques for tumbling, balance beam, uneven bars, and vault with clarity and enthusiasm.
  • Implement pre-designed lesson plans and curriculum, ensuring a structured and progressive learning experience for all participants.
  • Lead dynamic warm-up and cool-down exercises designed to improve flexibility, build strength, and properly prepare the body for and recover from athletic activity.
  • Provide individualized attention and constructive, positive feedback to gymnasts to help them understand corrections and improve their technique.
  • Manage class dynamics and flow, effectively addressing behavioral issues with patience and respect to maintain a productive learning environment for all.
  • Maintain a positive, encouraging, and inclusive class atmosphere that fosters self-confidence, perseverance, and a genuine love for the sport.
  • Ensure all participants and staff adhere strictly to the gym's safety rules, procedures, and policies at all times.
  • Set up, adjust, move, and break down gymnastics apparatus and training equipment according to specific class needs and strict safety standards.
  • Conduct regular visual safety inspections of all equipment, mats, and the general gym area, reporting any potential hazards or maintenance needs immediately to a supervisor.
  • Supervise children during non-instructional periods, such as before and after class or during water breaks, ensuring their safety and appropriate behavior.
  • Adapt coaching methods, drills, and explanations to accommodate the different learning styles, ages, and physical abilities present within a single class.

Secondary Functions

  • Greet parents and gymnasts upon arrival and departure, creating a welcoming, friendly, and professional first impression.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with parents regarding their child's progress, class information, and upcoming gym events.
  • Assist in the organization, setup, and supervision of special events, including birthday parties, open gym sessions, parent's night out, and summer or holiday camps.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the gymnastics floor, equipment storage areas, cubbies, and spectator viewing zones.
  • Administer basic first aid for minor injuries (scrapes, bruises) as certified and follow established emergency protocols for reporting more serious incidents.
  • Track and record gymnast attendance and skill progression in designated systems, communicating achievements and areas for improvement to head coaches.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Spotting Technique: Proficient knowledge and application of safe and effective spotting techniques for fundamental gymnastics skills.
  • Gymnastics Fundamentals: Solid understanding of basic gymnastics terminology, body positions, and skill progressions on floor, beam, bars, and vault.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification: Current certification in CPR, First Aid, and AED for infants, children, and adults is required or must be obtained shortly after hiring.
  • Equipment Management: Ability to safely set up, adjust, and inspect a variety of gymnastics apparatus and mats.
  • Safety Protocol Adherence: Deep understanding of and commitment to enforcing safety rules and emergency procedures in a gymnastics setting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent. Must be at least 16 or 18 years of age (varies by location).

Preferred Education:

  • Some college coursework in a relevant field.
  • USA Gymnastics Safety/Risk Management Certification or equivalent.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Kinesiology or Exercise Science

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0 - 2 years

Preferred:

  • 6+ months of experience working with children in a teaching, coaching, or camp environment is highly desirable.
  • Personal background in gymnastics, tumbling, or cheerleading is a significant plus.
