Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assemble custom computer systems, high-performance workstations, servers, and specialized electronic devices according to detailed build instructions, schematics, and engineering diagrams.
  • Install and securely seat a wide range of hardware components, including motherboards, CPUs, GPUs, RAM modules, storage drives (SSD/HDD), and complex peripheral interface cards.
  • Perform meticulous and strategic cable management and wire routing to ensure optimal system airflow, thermal performance, ease of serviceability, and a professional, clean aesthetic.
  • Flash, update, and configure system BIOS/UEFI settings to align with specific performance benchmarks, enable hardware features, and ensure component compatibility.
  • Install and configure various operating systems (e.g., Windows, Linux distributions) and load all necessary drivers and firmware for integrated hardware components.
  • Conduct comprehensive, system-level diagnostic tests, burn-in procedures, and performance benchmarks to verify functionality, stability, and adherence to strict quality standards.
  • Systematically identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex hardware, software, and firmware issues that arise during the assembly, configuration, and testing phases.
  • Execute detailed quality assurance (QA) checks on all finished builds, inspecting for physical defects, loose connections, and any deviation from project specifications.
  • Carefully and accurately document the entire build process, logging component serial numbers, specific configurations, test results, and any deviations from the standard operating procedure.
  • Manage, organize, and maintain an accurate inventory of hardware components, tools, and assembly consumables, proactively reporting shortages or discrepancies to procurement.
  • Disassemble, repair, and upgrade existing hardware systems, which includes replacing faulty components and performing modifications as directed by engineering change orders.
  • Collaborate closely with hardware engineering and design teams to provide critical, hands-on feedback regarding build processes, component selection, case design, and potential DFM (Design for Manufacturability) improvements.
  • Set up, calibrate, and maintain dedicated test benches and specialized diagnostic equipment required for system assembly, validation, and burn-in testing.
  • Prepare and package finished systems for safe shipment, ensuring all internal components are secure and the unit is protected against shock, vibration, and environmental damage during transit.
  • Adhere strictly to electrostatic discharge (ESD) safety protocols and other workplace safety standards at all times to prevent component damage and personal injury.
  • Interpret complex technical drawings, bill of materials (BOMs), and assembly work instructions to guide the construction of intricate and non-standard electronic assemblies.
  • Perform precision soldering and de-soldering on circuit boards and components as required for specific repairs, prototypes, or custom modifications.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workspace, often following 5S principles, to support high-quality production and a safe operational environment.
  • Assist in the technical evaluation and validation of new hardware components, tools, or potential suppliers to ensure they meet established quality and performance criteria.
  • Log all testing results, identified failures, and corrective actions taken in a centralized tracking system or database for trend analysis and continuous process improvement.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in training and mentoring junior builders or new team members on standard operating procedures, safety protocols, and build best practices.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives by proactively suggesting enhancements to build processes, workstation layouts, tools, or technical documentation.
  • Provide hands-on technical support and assistance to other departments, such as R&D or quality assurance, for hardware-related tasks or investigations.
  • Contribute to the general upkeep, organization, and maintenance of the hardware lab or production facility environment.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep proficiency in PC, workstation, and server hardware assembly and disassembly.
  • Strong, current knowledge of computer components (CPU, GPU, RAM, Motherboards, PSUs, storage) and their compatibility nuances.
  • Proven experience with BIOS/UEFI configuration, firmware flashing, and RAID setup.
  • Skill in operating system installation (Windows, Linux) and manual/automated driver management.
  • Ability to effectively use hardware diagnostic and stress-testing software (e.g., MemTest86, Prime95, FurMark, AIDA64).
  • Expert-level cable management and clean wire routing techniques.
  • Competency in reading and interpreting technical schematics, assembly drawings, and bills of materials (BOMs).
  • Foundational soldering and electronics rework skills for component-level tasks.
  • Thorough understanding of and adherence to ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) prevention best practices.
  • Experience with inventory management systems and meticulous documentation of build processes and test results.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of direct, hands-on experience in a technical assembly role.
