Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously inspect and grade green and kiln-dried hardwood lumber according to strict National Hardwood Lumber Association (NHLA) rules to maximize board value and yield.
  • Accurately identify a wide variety of North American hardwood species, such as Oak, Maple, Cherry, Walnut, and Poplar, based on grain, color, and other physical characteristics.
  • Systematically evaluate lumber for defects including knots, splits, wane, staining, and warping, determining their impact on the final grade.
  • Operate and interpret readings from moisture meters to verify that kiln-dried lumber meets precise moisture content specifications for stability and quality.
  • Ensure all graded lumber bundles are correctly tallied for board footage, piece count, and grade, utilizing both manual methods and electronic tally systems.
  • Communicate grading decisions and provide clear, constructive feedback to sawmill and kiln operators to improve upstream processes and overall lumber quality.
  • Execute custom grading sorts based on unique customer specifications, ensuring a high level of satisfaction and repeat business.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate records of graded inventory, production volumes, and quality metrics for reporting and analysis.
  • Uphold a safe, clean, and organized work environment around the grading station and lumber chains, adhering to all company safety protocols.
  • Apply end sealants, markings, and tags to lumber bundles to clearly identify grade, footage, and other critical information for inventory management and shipping.
  • Collaborate with the sales team to understand market demands and customer needs, adjusting grading strategies to optimize sales opportunities.
  • Perform regular checks on grading equipment, including chains, stops, and tally systems, to ensure they are in proper working order.
  • Assist in the training and development of junior inspectors or lumber handlers, sharing knowledge of grading rules and species identification.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at increasing efficiency, reducing waste, and enhancing product value.
  • Monitor lumber flow on the grading chain, making real-time decisions to maintain a steady and efficient pace of production.
  • Manage the proper stacking and placement of graded lumber packages to ensure stability and prevent damage during storage and transport.
  • Investigate and resolve quality control issues or customer claims by re-inspecting material and providing detailed analysis and reports.
  • Interpret and apply complex grading rules for specialized products, such as quarter-sawn, rift-sawn, or figured lumber.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision, demonstrating strong self-motivation and a commitment to meeting production targets.
  • Conduct regular inventory cycle counts of graded lumber to ensure physical stock matches system records.
  • Prepare and verify shipping documents to confirm that outbound loads match customer orders in terms of grade, species, and volume.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide support for special projects, such as analyzing the yield of specific logs or testing new processing techniques.
  • Assist with general yard duties, including operating a forklift to move lumber packs, during peak periods or when primary duties are complete.
  • Contribute to team meetings by sharing observations on lumber quality trends and suggesting process adjustments.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of downstream manufacturing processes (e.g., flooring, cabinetry) to better understand the end-use impact of grading decisions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • NHLA Grading Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge and practical application of NHLA hardwood grading rules. NHLA certification is highly preferred.
  • Species Identification: Proven ability to accurately and quickly identify a wide range of domestic hardwood species.
  • Defect Recognition: Expertise in identifying all types of natural and machine-induced lumber defects and their impact on grade.
  • Lumber Tallying: Proficiency in using a lumber rule and performing calculations to determine board footage accurately.
  • Moisture Meter Operation: Skilled in the use of pin and pinless moisture meters to verify wood moisture content.
  • Basic Computer Proficiency: Experience with inventory management software, data entry, and electronic tally systems (e.g., Handheld Terminals).
  • Forklift Operation: Ability to safely operate a forklift to handle and transport lumber bundles.
  • Measurement Acuity: Strong ability to read a tape measure and other measuring instruments with precision.
  • Basic Equipment Maintenance: Competence in performing minor adjustments and preventative maintenance on grading station equipment.
  • Understanding of Wood Science: Foundational knowledge of wood properties, drying principles, and the effects of milling on lumber quality.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • 2-5 years of hands-on experience as a hardwood lumber inspector in a sawmill, concentration yard, or secondary manufacturing facility.

  • 5+ years of experience grading a diverse mix of North American hardwood species in a high-production environment.
  • Verifiable NHLA certification and a strong track record of consistent, accurate grading.
  • Prior experience training or mentoring other graders or lumber handlers.
