Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Execute the safe and compliant collection, segregation, and consolidation of various hazardous and non-hazardous waste streams throughout a facility.
Perform meticulous labeling, marking, and placarding of waste containers to ensure full compliance with RCRA, DOT, and other applicable regulations.
Accurately prepare, review, and sign hazardous waste manifests and all related shipping documentation to ensure chain of custody and regulatory adherence.
Operate material handling equipment, including forklifts, drum dollies, and pallet jacks, to safely move and stage waste containers for storage or shipment.
Conduct routine and documented inspections of Satellite Accumulation Areas (SAAs) and Central Accumulation Areas (CAAs) to identify and correct any potential compliance issues.
Perform "lab packing" of diverse laboratory chemicals and materials, ensuring proper segregation based on chemical compatibility and regulatory requirements.
Respond promptly and effectively to incidental spills of hazardous materials, utilizing proper spill control techniques and personal protective equipment.
Load and unload waste transport vehicles, verifying container counts, manifest information, and proper securing of the load before departure.
Maintain a precise inventory of all hazardous materials and waste on-site, tracking generation, accumulation, and shipment dates.
Ensure all waste containers are in good condition, compatible with their contents, and properly closed to prevent leaks or spills.
Decontaminate equipment, containers, and work areas to ensure they are free from hazardous residues and safe for reuse or subsequent handling.
Collect representative samples from waste streams for laboratory analysis and waste characterization to support profiling and disposal decisions.
Assist in the profiling of new or unknown waste streams by gathering data on the generating process and chemical constituents.
Uphold a constant state of readiness for regulatory inspections by maintaining organized records and compliant storage areas.
Interface professionally with client personnel to provide guidance on proper waste management practices and to coordinate waste pickups.

Secondary Functions

Participate actively in daily safety meetings, site-specific training, and ongoing professional development to stay current with regulations and best practices.
Assist in the maintenance and calibration of equipment used for waste management, including scales, pumps, and monitoring devices.
Support the Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) department by contributing to waste minimization initiatives and sustainability projects.
Act as a member of the facility’s emergency response team, participating in drills and responding to site emergencies as trained.
Maintain and restock supplies for waste management and spill response, including PPE, containers, labels, and absorbent materials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Regulatory Knowledge: Deep understanding of environmental regulations, including EPA, RCRA, and state-specific hazardous waste rules.
DOT Hazmat Regulations: Proficiency in DOT regulations for the transportation of hazardous materials, including shipping papers, placarding, and packaging (49 CFR).
HAZWOPER Certification: Current 40-hour or 24-hour HAZWOPER certification with an up-to-date 8-hour refresher is essential.
Waste Characterization: Ability to assist in or perform waste characterization and profiling based on process knowledge and analytical data.
Forklift Operation: Certified and experienced in safely operating forklifts and other powered industrial trucks.
Chemical Compatibility: Strong knowledge of chemical hazards and compatibility to ensure safe segregation and storage of waste.
Manifesting & Recordkeeping: Experience completing Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifests, Land Disposal Restriction (LDR) forms, and maintaining meticulous records.
PPE Proficiency: Expertise in the selection, use, and maintenance of various levels of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Spill Response: Trained in emergency spill response and cleanup procedures for various types of hazardous substances.
Sampling Techniques: Knowledge of proper techniques for collecting solid and liquid samples for laboratory analysis.
