Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct, manage, and oversee all aspects of a competitive intercollegiate basketball program, ensuring it operates with integrity and in alignment with the institution's mission.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive recruiting strategy to identify, evaluate, and attract exceptional student-athletes who demonstrate both athletic talent and strong academic potential.
  • Design and execute sophisticated practice plans, in-game coaching strategies, and opponent scouting reports to maximize team performance and competitive success.
  • Foster the holistic development of student-athletes, providing mentorship and guidance in academic achievement, personal responsibility, leadership, and life skills.
  • Oversee the academic progress of all team members, collaborating with academic support staff to ensure eligibility and progress towards graduation.
  • Establish and maintain a positive, disciplined, and supportive team culture that prioritizes sportsmanship, accountability, and the overall well-being of student-athletes.
  • Lead the recruitment, hiring, and professional development of a qualified and effective coaching staff, including assistant coaches and support personnel.
  • Manage the program's operating budget, including allocations for recruiting, team travel, equipment, and other operational needs, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Plan, coordinate, and manage all team travel logistics, including transportation, lodging, and meals for away contests and tournaments.
  • Develop and implement year-round strength, conditioning, and nutritional programs in collaboration with athletic training and sports performance staff.
  • Utilize advanced video analysis and statistical data (e.g., Synergy, Hudl) for player development, opponent scouting, and self-scouting purposes.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all NCAA, conference, and institutional rules and regulations, maintaining meticulous records and promoting a culture of compliance among staff and players.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson for the basketball program, effectively engaging with media, alumni, and the broader community to promote the team and the institution.

Secondary Functions

  • Actively participate in fundraising initiatives, donor cultivation, and alumni relations events to generate financial support for the basketball program and athletic department.
  • Organize and direct summer basketball camps, clinics, and other community outreach programs to build relationships and promote the sport.
  • Collaborate with the marketing and promotions department to increase game attendance, enhance the fan experience, and build brand awareness.
  • Maintain and manage program inventory, including uniforms, practice gear, and other essential equipment, overseeing procurement and maintenance.
  • Represent the university at conference meetings, national conventions, and other professional development opportunities.
  • Build and sustain strong, positive relationships with high school coaches, AAU program directors, and other key figures within the basketball community.
  • Oversee the evaluation of team performance, individual player statistics, and recruiting analytics to inform strategic decisions.
  • Contribute to departmental meetings and initiatives, serving as a collaborative member of the athletic department's leadership team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Strategic Knowledge: Deep understanding of basketball X's and O's, including various offensive and defensive systems, set plays, and end-of-game strategies.
  • NCAA/NAIA/NFHS Compliance: Expert-level knowledge of and commitment to all governing body bylaws, rules, and regulations.
  • Recruiting & Talent Evaluation: Proven ability to identify, assess, and successfully recruit student-athletes at a national level.
  • Video Analysis Software Proficiency: Expertise with tools like Synergy, Hudl, Krossover, or similar platforms for game analysis and scouting.
  • Budget Management: Experience developing and managing a complex operational budget for a sports program.
  • Player Skill Development: Demonstrable ability to teach advanced basketball fundamentals and develop players' skills at an elite level.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification: Current certification is often required for safety and liability purposes.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
