More than just a supervisor, the Head Foreman is a mentor, a problem-solver, and the primary driver of site safety, quality, and productivity. You are responsible for orchestrating the daily and weekly flow of work, ensuring that multiple teams and trades operate in harmony to meet project milestones safely and efficiently. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Direct and oversee all on-site construction operations, providing senior leadership to multiple foremen and their respective crews to ensure project objectives are met.
  • Develop, coordinate, and manage daily and weekly work plans, aligning crew tasks with the master project schedule and critical path activities.
  • Proactively identify and resolve complex on-site conflicts, logistical challenges, and construction issues to minimize delays and maintain project momentum.
  • Champion and enforce a world-class safety culture, ensuring strict adherence to all OSHA and company safety regulations across the entire job site.
  • Serve as the primary communication conduit between the field workforce and senior project management, translating project goals into actionable tasks for crews.
  • Meticulously review and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and project specifications to guide execution and ensure accuracy.
  • Conduct continuous inspections of work in progress to guarantee that workmanship, materials, and installations meet the highest quality standards and contract requirements.
  • Manage and optimize the allocation of labor, equipment, and materials across multiple work fronts to maximize productivity and control costs.
  • Lead daily "toolbox talks" and pre-task safety briefings to communicate hazards, expectations, and the day's plan to all site personnel.
  • Mentor, coach, and develop subordinate foremen, providing constructive feedback and guidance to build a strong field leadership team.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate project documentation, including daily field reports, progress logs, safety incident reports, and resource tracking.
  • Coordinate seamlessly with subcontractors, vendors, and third-party inspectors to ensure their work is scheduled and integrated efficiently into the overall project flow.
  • Monitor crew productivity and project progress against established goals, reporting key performance indicators and potential variances to the Superintendent.
  • Take decisive action to correct unsafe conditions or poor-quality work immediately upon discovery.
  • Manage site logistics, including laydown areas, material deliveries, site access, and pedestrian/vehicle traffic control plans.
  • Approve craft worker timesheets, ensuring accurate coding and tracking of labor hours against project budgets.
  • Play a key role in short-term and look-ahead scheduling, providing practical, field-level input to the project management team.
  • Uphold and enforce all company policies and procedures on the job site, ensuring a professional and respectful work environment.
  • Assess the competency and capability of workers, and assist in making decisions regarding crew composition and task assignments.
  • Manage the proper use, maintenance, and security of all company-owned or rented tools and equipment on the project site.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the Project Superintendent with long-range project planning, phasing, and resource forecasting.
  • Contribute to value engineering discussions by suggesting alternative methods or materials that could improve efficiency or reduce costs.
  • Participate in the formal performance evaluation process for subordinate foremen and key craft personnel.
  • Collaborate with the safety department to conduct in-depth incident investigations and implement effective corrective and preventative actions.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert-Level Blueprint Reading: The ability to thoroughly read, understand, and interpret complex construction drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Construction Methods & Materials: Deep, hands-on knowledge of construction processes, sequencing, materials, and building codes relevant to the project scope.
  • Safety Management: Advanced knowledge of OSHA standards (OSHA 30 preferred) and demonstrated ability to manage a comprehensive site safety program.
  • Construction Software Proficiency: Experience using field management software like Procore, Bluebeam, PlanGrid, or similar platforms for documentation and communication.
  • Project Scheduling & Planning: Strong ability to understand and contribute to project schedules (look-aheads, short-term plans) and resource allocation.
  • Quality Control: A keen eye for detail and the ability to identify and enforce high standards of workmanship.
  • Equipment & Tools Expertise: Broad knowledge of construction equipment, tools, and their proper application and maintenance requirements.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate from a vocational or trade school in a relevant construction discipline.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or a related field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Construction Management
  • Skilled Trades (Carpentry, Electrical, Concrete, etc.)

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 10-15+ years of progressive experience in the construction industry, including a minimum of 5-7 years in a Foreman or direct supervisory capacity.

Preferred: Proven experience leading multiple crews on large-scale commercial, industrial, or civil construction projects valued at over $20 million.
