Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Facilitate in-depth requirements gathering sessions, workshops, and interviews with diverse stakeholders, including clinicians, physicians, nurses, and administrative staff, to capture complex business and clinical needs.
  • Translate abstract business needs into detailed, unambiguous functional and non-functional requirements, user stories with acceptance criteria, and technical specifications for development teams.
  • Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including Business Requirements Documents (BRDs), use cases, process flow diagrams (using BPMN/UML), and data mapping specifications.
  • Conduct thorough gap analysis to compare the "as-is" state of clinical or business workflows with the desired "to-be" state, identifying pain points, risks, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Act as the primary liaison between business units and IT/engineering teams, fostering clear communication and ensuring a shared understanding of project goals and requirements throughout the development lifecycle.
  • Analyze complex healthcare data sets from sources like Electronic Health Records (EHRs), claims systems, and patient registries to identify trends, measure outcomes, and provide data-driven recommendations.
  • Design and develop comprehensive test plans, test cases, and user acceptance testing (UAT) strategies to validate that developed solutions meet the specified requirements and are fit for purpose.
  • Ensure all proposed technology solutions and process changes are fully compliant with healthcare industry regulations and standards, most notably HIPAA, HITECH, and data privacy laws.
  • Provide subject matter expertise on healthcare operational workflows, clinical terminologies (e.g., SNOMED CT, ICD-10, CPT), and interoperability standards like HL7 and FHIR.
  • Evaluate potential software and hardware solutions, participating in vendor selection processes and assessing their suitability to solve specific healthcare business challenges.
  • Collaborate with project managers to define project scope, objectives, and deliverables, and assist in managing the product backlog in an Agile/Scrum environment.
  • Perform detailed data mapping and define transformation logic for data integration and migration projects between different clinical and financial systems.
  • Develop and present reports, dashboards, and visualizations (using tools like Tableau or Power BI) to communicate analytical findings and project progress to both technical and non-technical leadership.
  • Investigate and perform root cause analysis for system defects, data quality issues, and user-reported problems, collaborating with technical teams to prioritize and resolve them.
  • Support the implementation and go-live of new systems by developing training materials, conducting user training sessions, and providing post-launch support to ensure smooth adoption.
  • Model and document current and future state business processes, helping stakeholders visualize the impact of change on their daily operations and patient care delivery.
  • Lead stakeholder review meetings and walkthroughs to present findings, validate documented requirements, and secure formal sign-off on key project deliverables.
  • Assist in the creation of business cases and return on investment (ROI) analyses for new technology initiatives to support executive decision-making and funding approval.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, best practices, and new regulations within the health IT and digital health landscape to continuously inform and improve organizational strategy.
  • Support change management activities by clearly communicating the "why" behind system and process changes, addressing user concerns, and championing the benefits of new solutions.
