Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the full installation of domestic and commercial heating systems, including boilers, air source heat pumps, radiators, hot water cylinders, and associated pipework.
  • Perform system conversions and upgrades, such as moving from conventional to combi-boiler systems or integrating renewable technologies.
  • Conduct thorough diagnostic checks, systematic fault-finding, and effective repairs on a wide variety of heating appliances and systems.
  • Commission newly installed heating systems, ensuring they operate efficiently, safely, and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Read and precisely interpret technical blueprints, schematics, and installation manuals to plan and execute complex installations.
  • Install, test, and balance underfloor heating (UFH) systems, integrating them seamlessly with new or existing control interfaces.
  • Work competently with various pipework materials, including copper and plastic, utilizing techniques such as soldering, brazing, and press-fitting.
  • Carry out the installation and servicing of unvented hot water cylinders, requiring a G3 qualification.
  • Install and configure modern smart thermostats and advanced multi-zone heating controls (e.g., Nest, Hive, Tado).
  • Perform power flushing on central heating systems to remove sludge and debris, restoring efficiency and system health.
  • Decommission and safely remove old heating systems and their components in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
  • Conduct pre-installation site surveys to assess project feasibility, identify requirements, and plan the most efficient installation strategy.

Secondary Functions

  • Adhere strictly to all health and safety protocols on-site, including Gas Safe regulations and conducting dynamic risk assessments.
  • Complete all required job-related documentation with high accuracy, including commissioning checklists, service records, and landlord gas safety certificates (CP12).
  • Provide outstanding customer service by clearly explaining system functionality, demonstrating controls, and advising on best practices for energy efficiency.
  • Manage and maintain van stock levels, ensuring essential parts and materials are available to complete jobs efficiently without delay.
  • Collaborate effectively with other tradespeople, including electricians, plumbers, and builders, to ensure a smooth and coordinated project workflow.
  • Respond to emergency breakdown call-outs in a timely manner, providing professional and reassuring support to clients.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance to apprentices and junior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and skill development.
  • Stay current with emerging industry technologies, new product innovations, and evolving regulations through continuous professional development and training.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Gas Safe Registration: Essential certification including core domestic gas safety (CCN1) and central heating boilers (CENWAT).
  • Heat Pump Expertise: Proven experience in the installation and commissioning of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP); MCS accreditation is highly desirable.
  • Unvented Hot Water Systems: G3 qualification for the installation and servicing of unvented cylinders.
  • Pipefitting and Jointing: High proficiency in soldering, brazing, and using press-fit systems for copper and plastic pipework.
  • Diagnostic and Fault-Finding: Strong analytical ability to systematically diagnose and resolve complex mechanical and electrical faults in heating systems.
  • System Wiring and Electrics: Competence in wiring heating controls, boilers, and components, including safe isolation procedures.
  • Knowledge of Regulations: Deep understanding of current Building Regulations, Water Regulations, and Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations.
  • Power Flushing: Experience using power flushing equipment to clean and restore central heating systems.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Relevant and in-date Gas Safe registration (e.g., CCN1, CENWAT).
  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing and Heating or a related field.

Preferred Education:

  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Gas Utilisation Installation and Maintenance.
  • Manufacturer-specific training certificates (e.g., Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Daikin).
  • OFTEC qualification for oil-fired systems.
  • MCS certification for renewable heat technologies.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7+ years of hands-on experience in a dedicated heating installation or gas engineering role.

Preferred: Demonstrable experience leading residential installations from start to finish, including boiler swaps, full system fittings, and heat pump installations. Experience in both domestic and light commercial environments is a significant advantage. A clean driving license is essential.
