Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive diagnostic assessments on a wide variety of heating equipment, including gas furnaces, oil boilers, electric heat pumps, and ductless mini-split systems, to accurately identify malfunctions and their root causes.
  • Perform intricate repairs on heating systems by replacing defective components such as motors, thermostats, ignitors, gas valves, circuit boards, and heat exchangers.
  • Execute scheduled preventative maintenance tasks, including cleaning burners, checking flue drafts, testing safety controls, and lubricating moving parts, to ensure optimal performance and extend equipment lifespan.
  • Install new residential and light commercial heating systems, which involves setting equipment, running fuel lines, fabricating and connecting ductwork, and performing electrical wiring according to code and manufacturer specifications.
  • Skillfully braze and solder refrigerant lines for heat pump systems, ensuring leak-free connections and proper system integrity.
  • Utilize a range of diagnostic tools, including multimeters, combustion analyzers, manifold gauges, and leak detectors, to troubleshoot and verify system operations.
  • Respond promptly to emergency service calls, often outside of normal business hours, to restore heating for customers in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Provide clear, professional explanations of diagnoses, proposed repairs, and associated costs to customers, ensuring they understand the work being performed.
  • Educate homeowners and building managers on the proper operation and maintenance of their heating systems to promote energy efficiency and prevent future breakdowns.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and well-stocked service vehicle with the necessary parts and tools to complete a high percentage of service calls on the first visit.
  • Adhere strictly to all local, state, and federal building codes, as well as all company safety policies and procedures, to ensure a safe work environment for oneself and others.
  • Accurately complete all required documentation, including work orders, service reports, and parts invoices, using mobile software or paper forms.
  • Test and calibrate system controls, including thermostats and zone-damper systems, to ensure they are functioning as designed and providing balanced comfort.
  • Perform professional commissioning and start-up procedures for newly installed equipment to verify it meets performance and safety standards.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydronic heating systems, including boilers, circulator pumps, expansion tanks, and radiators, identifying and resolving issues with water flow and temperature.
  • Evaluate existing heating systems and provide customers with informed recommendations for system upgrades or replacements based on age, condition, and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with installation and sales teams by providing technical feedback from the field to assist in the proper design and quoting of new systems.
  • Manage job site logistics, ensuring materials and equipment are handled safely and the work area is kept clean and secure throughout the service or installation process.
  • Stay current with the latest industry trends, technologies, and equipment by participating in manufacturer training and continuing education courses.
  • Systematically test for gas leaks, carbon monoxide presence, and proper ventilation to guarantee the absolute safety of the customer's environment post-service.

  • Blueprint & Schematic Reading: Strong ability to read and interpret technical manuals, wiring diagrams, and mechanical blueprints to understand system design and function.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7 years of documented, hands-on experience as a service technician in the residential and/or commercial heating industry.

  • Possession of a Journeyman or Master license in a relevant trade (HVAC, Gas Fitter).
  • NATE (North American Technician Excellence) certification in one or more heating specialties.
