Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously set up, operate, and monitor a variety of industrial heat-treating furnaces, such as vacuum, atmosphere, induction, and salt bath, to process metal parts according to precise specifications.
  • Carefully read and interpret complex work orders, blueprints, engineering drawings, and metallurgical process sheets to determine the exact heating time, temperature, and cooling requirements for each job.
  • Skillfully load and unload diverse metal parts and components onto fixtures, into baskets, or onto furnace conveyors, often utilizing overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts for heavy materials.
  • Diligently monitor and adjust furnace controls, including programmable logic controllers (PLCs), timers, and gas flow meters, to ensure all process parameters remain within specified tolerances.
  • Conduct rigorous quality control tests on treated parts, including performing Rockwell, Brinell, or Vickers hardness testing to verify that material properties meet engineering standards.
  • Perform detailed visual and dimensional inspections of parts before and after treatment to identify any defects, warpage, or surface imperfections.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate production logs, furnace charts, and data entry records, documenting all processing steps, parameters, and quality results for traceability and compliance.
  • Execute a range of heat-treating processes including hardening, tempering, annealing, normalizing, carburizing, and nitriding based on the specific requirements of the metal alloy and part application.
  • Safely handle and manage various industrial gases (e.g., nitrogen, argon, ammonia) and quenching media (e.g., oil, water, polymers), ensuring proper flow rates and temperatures.
  • Operate shot blast, sandblast, or other surface finishing equipment to clean and prepare parts prior to or after the heat-treating process.
  • Calibrate and perform daily checks on furnace instrumentation and quality testing equipment to ensure their accuracy and reliability.
  • Troubleshoot furnace operations and process deviations in real-time, making necessary adjustments to equipment and parameters to resolve issues and prevent scrap.
  • Prepare parts for processing by cleaning, degreasing, racking, or wiring them according to established procedures to ensure uniform heating and cooling.
  • Work closely with the Metallurgy and Quality Engineering departments to review results, discuss process improvements, and resolve any non-conformances.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety policies, OSHA regulations, and environmental guidelines, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Manage the workflow to ensure timely completion of orders while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
  • Utilize computer systems and enterprise resource planning (ERP) software to track work orders, log processing data, and manage inventory of materials.
  • Carefully package and identify finished parts, ensuring they are protected from damage and correctly routed to the next manufacturing step or shipping department.
  • Analyze and interpret furnace chart recordings and data logs to confirm that the thermal cycle was completed successfully and according to plan.
  • Perform straightening operations using arbor presses or other methods to correct any distortion or warpage that may occur during the heating and quenching cycle.
  • Take samples for metallurgical analysis, including micro-hardness testing and microscopic examination of the grain structure, as required by quality protocols.

  • Assist in performing routine preventative maintenance and minor repairs on furnace equipment, such as replacing thermocouples or cleaning components, to minimize downtime.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by actively identifying and suggesting enhancements to processes for better safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Participate actively in team meetings, safety briefings, and ongoing training sessions to stay current with company policies and evolving industry best practices.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in compliance with 5S principles and company safety standards, ensuring all tools and materials are properly stored.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Furnace Operation: Proficient in operating and controlling various types of heat-treat furnaces (e.g., vacuum, induction, atmosphere).
  • Hardness Testing: Skilled in using Rockwell, Brinell, and/or micro-hardness testing equipment to verify material properties.
  • Blueprint & Specification Reading: Ability to accurately read and interpret technical drawings, work orders, and process specifications.
  • Measurement Tools: Competency in using precision measuring instruments like calipers, micrometers, and gauges.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

  • Specific experience operating vacuum furnaces and/or carburizing furnaces.
  • Documented experience operating powered industrial trucks (forklifts) and overhead cranes.
