Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Execute the installation of new central heating systems, including boilers (combi, system, heat-only), radiators, cylinders, and all associated pipework in both domestic and light commercial settings.
  • Conduct comprehensive annual servicing and routine maintenance on a variety of gas appliances and heating systems to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and longevity.
  • Apply advanced diagnostic and fault-finding techniques to accurately identify issues within complex heating systems, including electrical faults, component failure, and system blockages.
  • Perform meticulous repairs on boilers, programmers, pumps, valves, and controls, ensuring a high rate of first-time fixes by effectively utilizing van stock and technical knowledge.
  • Carry out landlord and homeowner Gas Safety inspections (CP12s), meticulously documenting findings and issuing certificates in full compliance with Gas Safe regulations.
  • Manage and execute boiler replacement projects, from initial customer consultation and system sizing to the complete decommissioning of old units and commissioning of new, high-efficiency models.
  • Respond promptly and professionally to emergency breakdown call-outs, working efficiently under pressure to restore heating and hot water for clients.
  • Perform power flushing on central heating systems to remove sludge and debris, significantly improving system efficiency and preventing future breakdowns.
  • Install, service, and repair unvented hot water cylinders (G3 qualified), ensuring all installations meet safety standards and building regulations.
  • Provide expert advice to customers on the operation of their heating systems, energy-saving measures, and potential upgrades, including smart thermostats and modern controls.
  • Commission newly installed heating systems, completing benchmark checklists and ensuring the system operates according to manufacturer's instructions and client expectations.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and accurate record of all jobs, including parts used, time spent, and detailed descriptions of work carried out, using a mobile PDA or tablet.
  • Ensure all work is performed in strict accordance with current Health & Safety legislation, company policies, and Gas Safe Register standards to guarantee the safety of yourself and the public.
  • Manage and maintain vehicle stock levels, ensuring the van is well-organized and equipped with the necessary parts and tools to handle a wide range of jobs efficiently.
  • Conduct pressure testing and leak detection on gas pipework installations to confirm the integrity and safety of the gas supply.
  • Install and configure modern smart heating controls and thermostats (e.g., Nest, Hive, Tado), explaining their functionality and benefits to the end-user.

Secondary Functions

  • Mentor and provide on-the-job guidance and technical support to apprentices and junior members of the engineering team.
  • Uphold an exceptional standard of customer service, maintaining a professional, courteous, and tidy appearance while building positive relationships with clients.
  • Participate actively in ongoing professional development and manufacturer-led training sessions to stay current with new boiler models, technologies, and evolving industry regulations.
  • Collaborate effectively with other tradespeople, such as electricians, builders, and project managers, on larger installation or refurbishment projects.
  • Generate clear, detailed, and competitive quotes for new installations, system upgrades, or significant repair work for customer approval.
  • Maintain the provided company vehicle, tools, and test equipment in a clean, safe, and fully functional condition.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Gas Safe Registration: Must hold current domestic core qualifications (CCN1, CENWAT, CKR1, HTR1).
  • NVQ Level 2/3 in Plumbing and Heating: Or equivalent City & Guilds qualification.
  • Unvented Hot Water Systems (G3): A formal qualification is essential for working with unvented cylinders.
  • Advanced Fault-Finding & Diagnostics: Proven ability to systematically diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical faults in boilers and heating controls.
  • Boiler Installation & Commissioning: Extensive experience installing and setting up systems from leading manufacturers (e.g., Vaillant, Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Ideal).
  • System Wiring Knowledge: Competent in understanding and wiring various heating control systems, including S-Plan, Y-Plan, and smart controls.
  • Power Flushing: Experience using power flushing equipment to clean and restore central heating systems.
  • Full UK Driving Licence: A clean and valid licence is required for this mobile role.
  • Renewable Technology Awareness: Knowledge of Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP) and other renewable heating solutions is highly desirable.
  • LPG & Commercial Gas Qualifications: Holding qualifications for LPG or commercial gas work (COCN1) would be a significant advantage.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Gas Utilisation Installation and Maintenance or equivalent.
  • Manufacturer-specific training accreditations.
