Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform in-depth diagnostics and troubleshooting on a diverse range of residential and light commercial heating systems, including gas furnaces, oil furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and ductless mini-splits.
  • Execute timely and effective repairs on malfunctioning heating equipment, skillfully replacing defective components such as motors, gas valves, igniters, circuit boards, and thermostats.
  • Conduct comprehensive preventative maintenance and precision tune-ups on heating systems to ensure optimal performance, safety, and energy efficiency, helping to prevent future breakdowns.
  • Install new and replacement heating systems, equipment, and accessories, adhering strictly to manufacturer specifications, local building codes, and company quality standards.
  • Accurately diagnose and service both gas and oil-fired boiler systems, including hydronic and steam systems, identifying and resolving complex operational issues.
  • Test, calibrate, and program system controls, including programmable and smart thermostats, ensuring they operate correctly to maximize comfort and efficiency.
  • Respond to emergency and after-hours service calls in a prompt, professional, and efficient manner to restore heat for customers in need.
  • Clearly and respectfully communicate diagnostic findings, a range of repair or replacement options, and transparent pricing to customers, empowering them to make informed decisions.
  • Educate homeowners and property managers on the proper operation and maintenance of their heating systems, offering energy-saving tips and advice.
  • Solder, weld, and braze refrigerant and water lines with precision as required for repairs and installations on heat pump and boiler systems.
  • Read and interpret complex wiring diagrams, schematics, and technical manuals to effectively troubleshoot and resolve electrical and mechanical failures.
  • Perform thorough combustion analysis using calibrated instruments and make necessary adjustments to burners and controls to ensure safe and efficient equipment operation.

Secondary Functions

  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and legible digital service reports, invoices, and other work-related documentation for every job.
  • Manage and maintain an organized and well-stocked inventory of parts, tools, and equipment in a company-provided service vehicle.
  • Identify and present opportunities for system upgrades, indoor air quality products, and service agreements that provide value and benefit to the customer.
    p- Adhere to all company and industry safety protocols, including the proper handling of refrigerants and use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Provide on-the-job guidance, mentorship, and support to apprentice technicians and installers, fostering a culture of continuous learning.
  • Collaborate effectively with dispatchers, customer service representatives, and the management team to ensure a seamless and positive customer journey.
  • Stay current with the latest HVAC technologies, industry best practices, and new product lines by participating in manufacturer and in-house training sessions.
  • Maintain a clean and professional appearance, including your uniform and service vehicle, to positively represent the company brand.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • EPA Universal Certification: Legally required for handling refrigerants in heat pump systems.
  • Advanced Diagnostics: Proficiency in troubleshooting furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, and related control systems using multimeters, manometer, and other diagnostic tools.
  • Electrical & Schematics: Strong understanding of low-voltage control circuits, high-voltage power, and the ability to read and interpret complex wiring diagrams.
  • Brazing & Soldering: Proven ability to create leak-free joints on copper piping for refrigerant and hydronic lines.
  • Combustion Analysis: Experience using a combustion analyzer to test and tune gas-fired equipment for safety and efficiency.
  • Valid Driver's License: A clean and valid driving record is mandatory for operating a company service vehicle.
  • Tech Savvy: Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and field service software for dispatching, invoicing, and reporting.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or Associate's Degree from an accredited HVAC/R vocational school or technical college.

  • Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVAC/R)
  • Electrical Technology
  • Mechanical Systems

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 2-5+ years of hands-on, professional experience as a residential or light commercial heating service technician.

Preferred:

  • Verifiable experience servicing a wide variety of equipment brands and models.
  • NATE (North American Technician Excellence) or other industry certifications are a strong plus.
  • Experience in a customer-facing role with a proven track record of excellent service.
