Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair heavy diesel engines, transmissions, differentials and driveline components using diagnostic tools, service manuals, and onboard computer systems to restore equipment to manufacturer specifications and safe operating condition.
  • Perform scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) on heavy equipment and trucks — including oil and filter changes, fluid top-ups, belt and hose replacement, lubrication, and multi-point inspections — to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems and components (pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, quick couplers), including pressure testing, leak location, hose fabrication, and seal replacement to restore proper system performance.
  • Test, diagnose, and repair electrical systems and components (starters, alternators, batteries, wiring harnesses, sensors, ECMs, lighting and instrument clusters) using multimeters, scanners and OEM diagnostic software.
  • Remove, disassemble, rebuild and reinstall major components such as engines, transmissions, torque converters, differentials, and final drives, following torque sequences, OEM specifications, and safety procedures.
  • Perform brake system inspections and repairs on hydraulic and air brake systems, including diagnosing air leaks, replacing brake chambers, valves, hoses, and performing brake adjustments and tests.
  • Conduct road tests and functional checks after repairs to verify performance, safety systems, and proper integration of repaired components under load and in operational conditions.
  • Use computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) or fleet maintenance software to log repairs, track work orders, schedule PMs, and order parts to maintain accurate service history and parts traceability.
  • Operate shop equipment safely and efficiently — lifts, hoists, jacks, tire changers, balancers, welding machines, and diagnostic lifts — to service heavy equipment components and assemblies.
  • Fabricate and modify brackets, mounts and metal components using welding (MIG/TIG), cutting, grinding and basic fabrication techniques to support repairs and custom mounting of parts.
  • Diagnose and repair cooling and HVAC systems (radiators, water pumps, thermostats, compressors, condensers) to maintain safe engine operating temperatures and operator comfort.
  • Read and interpret wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, parts catalogs and OEM service manuals to plan and execute complex repairs accurately.
  • Replace and balance heavy-duty tires, inspect wheel-end components, service hubs, bearings and seals, and perform alignments to ensure safe handling and minimize wear.
  • Maintain inventory of critical parts and consumables, place parts orders proactively, and manage vendor relationships to ensure timely parts availability for scheduled and emergency repairs.
  • Respond to emergency breakdown calls and provide roadside or field repairs under time constraints, including rigging, towing coordination and temporary fixes to return equipment to service.
  • Calibrate, program, or update onboard electronic control modules and perform emission control system troubleshooting and repairs to meet EPA/DOT or regional regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to apprentices, entry-level technicians or operators on safe maintenance practices, diagnostics, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Identify recurring failures, root cause analyze repetitive faults, and recommend design, operational, or maintenance changes to reduce repeat repairs and improve fleet reliability.
  • Prepare cost estimates, document labor and parts usage, and communicate timelines and repair status clearly to supervisors, fleet managers and equipment operators.
  • Ensure shop and field work complies with safety policies, OSHA/DOT regulations, lockout/tagout procedures, hazardous materials handling, and environmental disposal requirements.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas and ensure tools and equipment are stored, calibrated and inspected regularly to support efficient workflow and safety.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives, Kaizen events or reliability programs aimed at reducing downtime, lowering costs, and improving Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF).

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with periodic inspections required for regulatory compliance, fleet audits, and warranty claims including DOT pre-trip and post-trip forms.
  • Support parts and inventory cycle counts and help implement inventory control best practices to reduce stockouts and excess inventory.
  • Contribute to preventative improvement programs by documenting common wear items and suggesting upgrade or retrofit options.
  • Help coordinate with vendors, outside repair shops and rental agencies for specialized repairs, fabrications or emergency equipment replacements.
  • Provide on-call support rotation for after-hours or weekend emergency repairs when required by fleet operations.
  • Assist supervisors with shop workload scheduling, maintaining timecards and monitoring technician productivity metrics.
  • Participate in equipment acquisition evaluations by assessing serviceability, repair history and anticipated lifecycle costs of new or used equipment.
  • Support shop safety training sessions and maintain records of certifications, inspections, and required operator training.
  • Create and maintain clear, timely equipment condition reports and handoff notes for shift changes or handovers.
  • Contribute to environmental compliance activities such as waste oil recycling, coolant reclamation and proper disposal of hazardous materials.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Diesel engine diagnostics and overhaul (fuel systems, turbochargers, injectors, cylinder head service).
  • Hydraulic system diagnosis and repair, including pump and cylinder repair, hose assembly and hydraulic schematics interpretation.
  • Heavy vehicle electrical systems troubleshooting (12V/24V systems), ECM scanning, sensor and actuator replacement.
  • Transmission and driveline repair — manual, automatic and powershift transmissions; torque converter and clutch assemblies.
  • Brake systems expertise: air brake diagnostics, adjustments, and repair (WABCO, Bendix systems familiarity an asset).
  • Use of diagnostic software and tools (OBD scanners, OEM diagnostic suites, multimeters, pressure gauges, hydraulic test equipment).
  • Welding and metal fabrication (MIG/TIG/stick), cutting, grinding and basic jig/fixture fabrication.
  • Preventive maintenance practices and CMMS/fleet software usage for scheduling, work orders, and maintenance history (e.g., TMT, Fleetio, Maximo).
  • HVAC and cooling system service, radiator repair, coolant testing and thermostat/replacement procedures.
  • Tire service and wheel-end maintenance, including balancing, bearing replacement and alignment procedures.
  • Heavy equipment safety procedures: lockout/tagout, confined space entry (if applicable), PPE compliance and DOT/OSHA regulations.
  • Emission control systems and DEP/EPA compliance knowledge, including DPF, SCR and EGR systems troubleshooting.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, wiring diagrams and parts catalogs accurately.
  • Field service and emergency roadside repair experience, including rigging, towing coordination and temporary repairs.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with vocational training or on-the-job heavy equipment experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical diploma or certificate in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, or Automotive/Powertrain Technology from a trade school or community college.
  • Industry certifications such as ASE Medium/Heavy Truck (T-Series), manufacturer OEM certifications, or equivalent recognized credentials.
