Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform complex and precise diagnostics on diesel engines, powertrains, and electrical and hydraulic systems using specialized software and testing equipment to isolate root causes of failures.
  • Execute comprehensive, large-scale repairs and overhauls on a diverse fleet of heavy construction, mining, or agricultural equipment, including but not limited to excavators, loaders, dozers, and haul trucks.
  • Conduct thorough scheduled Preventive Maintenance (PM) services, including fluid analysis, filter replacements, and detailed inspections to proactively identify potential issues and minimize unscheduled downtime.
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and rebuild advanced load-sensing and pilot-operated hydraulic systems, including pumps, control valves, motors, cylinders, and hoses.
  • Diagnose and rectify faults within complex electrical and electronic control systems, including CAN bus networks, controllers (ECMs), sensors, and harnesses.
  • Utilize welding and fabrication skills (MIG, Stick) to perform structural repairs and modifications on buckets, booms, frames, and other critical equipment components.
  • Disassemble, inspect, and rebuild major components such as engines, transmissions, final drives, differentials, and hydraulic pumps to manufacturer specifications.
  • Proficiently use and interpret data from OEM diagnostic software (e.g., Caterpillar ET, John Deere Service Advisor, Komatsu Komtrax) to identify fault codes, monitor system performance, and calibrate components.
  • Perform field service repairs at customer job sites, which involves independently managing on-site safety, logistics, and customer communication while operating a service truck.
  • Read, interpret, and apply information from highly technical service manuals, complex schematics (hydraulic and electrical), and engineering blueprints to guide repair procedures.
  • Ensure all repair and maintenance activities meet or exceed stringent manufacturer specifications, industry regulations, and company safety standards.
  • Complete detailed, accurate, and timely documentation, including service reports, work orders, warranty claims, and parts requisitions using digital and paper-based systems.
  • Maintain a meticulously clean, safe, and organized work environment, whether in a designated shop bay or within a mobile service vehicle, practicing proper tool management and housekeeping.
  • Conduct rigorous operational tests and functional checks on repaired equipment to verify that all issues have been resolved and the machine is safe and ready for service.
  • Manage and maintain the inventory of tools, parts, and equipment on a service vehicle, ensuring it is always well-stocked and ready for dispatch.
  • Perform full-service diagnostics, repairs, and recharging of HVAC (air conditioning) systems on various types of heavy machinery cabins.
  • Respond to and resolve urgent equipment breakdown calls in a timely and efficient manner to reduce costly project delays.

  • Communicate technical findings, repair recommendations, and job progress updates clearly and professionally to service writers, managers, and end customers.
  • Act as a mentor and technical resource for apprentice technicians, providing on-the-job training, guidance, and sharing expert knowledge.

  • Champion and adhere to all company and OSHA safety policies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and job site hazard analysis.
  • Assist the parts department in correctly identifying and ordering necessary components, sometimes sourcing hard-to-find parts for older equipment.

  • Advanced Diesel Engine Systems: Deep knowledge of diagnostics, failure analysis, and complete repair of modern diesel engines, including fuel, exhaust after-treatment (DEF/SCR), and engine control systems.
  • Hydraulic System Mastery: Expertise in troubleshooting and repairing complex open- and closed-loop hydraulic systems, including the ability to read and interpret hydraulic schematics.
  • Electrical & Electronic Diagnostics: Strong proficiency in diagnosing and repairing 12/24V electrical systems, including CAN bus, sensors, solenoids, and electronic control modules (ECMs).
  • OEM Diagnostic Software: Hands-on proficiency with manufacturer-specific diagnostic software (e.g., CAT ET, John Deere Service Advisor, Komatsu Komtrax, CNH EST).
  • Welding and Fabrication: Competency in MIG and Stick welding for structural repairs and fabrication tasks.
  • Powertrain and Drivetrain Expertise: In-depth knowledge of repairing and rebuilding transmissions, final drives, differentials, and undercarriage components.
  • Schematic and Blueprint Interpretation: The ability to read and accurately interpret complex technical drawings, including electrical and hydraulic schematics.
  • Air Conditioning (HVAC) Systems: Certification (or ability to become certified) and experience in diagnosing and servicing mobile A/C systems.
  • Component Rebuilding: Proven ability to rebuild major components to OEM specifications, including engines, transmissions, and hydraulic pumps.

Educational Background
