Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate a Class A commercial vehicle (tractor-trailer) over long distances (OTR), regional, or local routes in compliance with all company policies and DOT regulations.
- Conduct comprehensive pre-trip, en-route, and post-trip inspections of the truck and trailer, documenting any defects or issues on the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
- Ensure the proper and secure loading of freight, utilizing straps, chains, binders, and tarps as needed to prevent shifting, damage, or loss during transit.
- Meticulously maintain accurate records of driving hours, service time, and rest periods using an Electronic Logging Device (ELD) to ensure full HOS compliance.
- Plan and execute efficient travel routes to meet demanding pickup and delivery schedules, using GPS and other navigational aids to adapt to traffic, weather, and construction.
- Maintain constant and professional communication with dispatchers, logistics coordinators, and customers to provide real-time updates on location, progress, and estimated arrival times.
- Verify all shipping documentation, such as the Bill of Lading (BOL), for accuracy against the loaded cargo before departing from a shipper or receiver.
- Manage the coupling and uncoupling of trailers, including the secure connection of all air and electrical lines, and performing tug tests to ensure a solid connection.
- Navigate diverse and challenging driving environments, including congested urban areas, steep mountain grades, and adverse weather conditions, with an unwavering focus on safety.
- Provide exceptional customer service at all delivery and pickup points, representing the company with a professional demeanor and a helpful attitude.
- Report all accidents, traffic violations, vehicle damage, or cargo discrepancies immediately to the Safety Department and your direct supervisor.
- Perform minor maintenance tasks on the vehicle, such as checking and maintaining fluid levels (oil, coolant), monitoring tire pressure, and ensuring all lights are operational.
- Manage fuel-stops efficiently and handle all on-road expenses, keeping detailed records and receipts for submission.
Secondary Functions
- Keep the cab and exterior of the assigned truck clean and presentable, reflecting company standards.
- Assist in the loading or unloading of freight when required, potentially using equipment like a pallet jack or liftgate.
- Stay current with all FMCSA and DOT regulations through company-provided training and personal diligence.
- Participate in mandatory safety meetings, training sessions, and performance reviews.
- Mentor new or less-experienced drivers when asked, sharing best practices for safety and efficiency.
- Proactively communicate potential issues with delivery schedules or vehicle mechanics to allow for timely problem-solving.
- Complete all required trip-related paperwork accurately and submit it in a timely fashion at the end of each run.
