Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive preventative maintenance (PM) inspections on tractors, trailers, and other heavy-duty equipment to ensure operational safety and minimize downtime.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair complex mechanical and electrical failures in heavy-duty trucks, including issues with engines (e.g., Cummins, Detroit Diesel, PACCAR), transmissions, differentials, and emissions control systems.
- Utilize advanced electronic diagnostic software and tools (e.g., JPRO, OEM software) to accurately identify fault codes, interpret data, and determine the most effective repair strategies for modern, computer-controlled vehicles.
- Conduct thorough inspections, repairs, and overhauls of air brake systems, ensuring full compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and DOT regulations.
- Repair and maintain chassis components, including steering systems, suspensions (air-ride and spring), fifth wheels, and driveline components to ensure vehicle stability and driver safety.
- Execute complete electrical system diagnostics and repairs, addressing issues with wiring harnesses, lighting, starting and charging systems, and onboard electronic control modules (ECMs).
- Perform federal and state-required DOT annual vehicle inspections, accurately documenting findings and completing necessary repairs to certify vehicle roadworthiness.
- Respond to and resolve road calls for emergency breakdowns in a timely and efficient manner, performing on-site diagnostics and repairs to get drivers back on the road safely.
- Service and repair vehicle heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to ensure driver comfort and operational functionality.
- Perform welding and metal fabrication tasks as needed for structural repairs on frames, chassis, and other vehicle components.
- Mount, dismount, and balance tires, as well as perform tire repairs and replacements in accordance with industry best practices.
- Maintain meticulous and accurate records of all maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and labor hours, utilizing a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
- Communicate effectively with drivers and fleet managers regarding vehicle condition, required repairs, and estimated completion times to facilitate efficient fleet operations.
- Manage parts inventory, including sourcing, ordering, and tracking necessary components to ensure availability for scheduled and unscheduled repairs.
- Road test vehicles before and after repairs to verify the effectiveness of the work performed and ensure all systems are operating to specification.
- Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems, including those for liftgates, wet kits, and other specialized equipment.
- Ensure a clean, safe, and organized work environment by adhering to all shop safety procedures, including lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) and proper handling of hazardous materials.
- Mentor and provide guidance to apprentice technicians, sharing knowledge and best practices to foster team development and skill growth.
- Perform engine overhauls and replacements, including disassembly, inspection of components, and reassembly to manufacturer specifications.
- Diagnose and repair after-treatment systems, including Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) systems.
- Inspect, service, and repair trailer components, including landing gear, roll-up and swing doors, flooring, and roof repairs.
- Stay current with emerging vehicle technologies, industry trends, and manufacturer service bulletins to continuously enhance technical expertise.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in maintaining shop cleanliness, organization, and the proper functioning of all shop tools and equipment.
- Provide expert input to management on the procurement of new tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop supplies.
- Actively participate in regular safety meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of shop safety protocols.
- Collaborate with the parts department to ensure accurate inventory levels and timely procurement of non-stocked items.

- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B.
