Primary Functions
- Drive the entire design process from initial concept ideation, and rough sketches, through 2D and 3D digital visualization, and on to final production-ready specifications.
- Develop and refine the aesthetic direction for new helmet lines, creating compelling forms, shapes, and surface details that align with brand identity and market trends.
- Create highly detailed and complex 3D CAD models (SolidWorks, Rhino, etc.) for all helmet components, including shells, liners, retention systems, and ventilation features.
- Generate photorealistic renderings and visualizations for internal reviews, marketing presentations, and sales materials to effectively communicate design intent.
- Collaborate intimately with mechanical engineers to integrate structural requirements, impact absorption systems (like MIPS), and ventilation performance into the design.
- Research and apply a deep understanding of global helmet safety standards (CPSC, ECE, ASTM, SNELL) to ensure all designs are compliant from the outset.
- Engage in hands-on prototyping, utilizing 3D printing, CNC machining, and model making to create physical models for ergonomic evaluation, fit testing, and aesthetic review.
- Define and specify colors, materials, finishes, and graphics (CMFG) for each product, working with suppliers to achieve the desired look and feel.
- Manage the transfer of design data to manufacturing partners, providing clear documentation and support to ensure a smooth transition from prototype to mass production.
- Analyze market trends, competitor products, and consumer feedback to identify opportunities for innovation and maintain a competitive edge.
- Work directly with product line managers and marketing teams to ensure designs meet strategic business objectives, price targets, and consumer needs.
- Prepare and present design concepts and project progress to key stakeholders, including executive leadership, sales teams, and international partners.
- Travel to manufacturing facilities in Asia and other regions to oversee tooling development, approve initial production samples, and troubleshoot any quality or cosmetic issues.
- Conduct fit studies and user testing sessions, gathering qualitative feedback to refine comfort, usability, and the overall user experience.
- Maintain a comprehensive knowledge of advanced materials, such as composites, advanced polymers, and EPS/EPP foams, and explore their application in new designs.
- Develop innovative solutions for helmet components, including visors, retention mechanisms, and adjustable fit systems, often leading to patentable inventions.
- Create and manage detailed technical packs and Bill of Materials (BOMs) that clearly communicate all design specifications to engineering and manufacturing teams.
- Lead brainstorming and creative workshops to foster a culture of innovation and generate a continuous flow of new product ideas.
- Liaise with sponsored athletes and industry experts to gather high-level performance insights and translate them into tangible product features and improvements.
- Juggle multiple projects simultaneously, effectively managing timelines and deliverables to align with the seasonal product development calendar.
