As an HGV Class 1 Driver, you are the face of our company on the road. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conducting comprehensive pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections to ensure roadworthiness, reporting any defects promptly through the correct channels.
  • Safely and efficiently operating HGV Class 1 (C+E) vehicles, including articulated lorries, in full compliance with all road traffic regulations and company policies.
  • Managing and securing various types of loads, such as palletised goods, chilled products, or general haulage, using appropriate strapping and restraining techniques.
  • Executing timely and accurate deliveries and collections to and from distribution centres, customer premises, and other specified locations across the country.
  • Adhering strictly to drivers' hours regulations and the Working Time Directive (WTD), accurately recording all activities using a digital tachograph.
  • Maintaining constant and clear communication with the transport office, providing regular updates on progress, delays, and any issues encountered on the road.
  • Completing all necessary paperwork and digital documentation, including proof of delivery (PODs), collection notes, and vehicle check sheets, with high accuracy.
  • Providing exceptional customer service when interacting with clients at delivery and collection points, acting as a professional ambassador for the company.
  • Navigating routes effectively using company-provided tools or personal expertise to ensure on-time performance and fuel-efficient driving.
  • Performing coupling and uncoupling procedures for trailers safely and correctly, ensuring all connections (air, electrics) are secure and functional.
  • Proactively identifying and reporting potential hazards or safety concerns in the workplace, on the road, and at customer sites.
  • Complying with all on-site health and safety procedures at both company depots and customer locations, including wearing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Operating vehicle equipment, such as tail lifts or pump trucks, safely and efficiently during loading and unloading processes.
  • Driving in a fuel-efficient manner to minimise operational costs and environmental impact, following best practice telematics-guided techniques.
  • Handling vehicle and delivery-related technology, including in-cab telematics, handheld scanners, and transport management system applications.
  • Undertaking overnight stays (nights out) or 'tramping' routes as required by the specific demands of the job schedule.
  • Ensuring the security of the vehicle and its load at all times, particularly during statutory breaks and overnight stops.

Secondary Functions

  • Assisting with the loading and unloading of the vehicle where required, ensuring the safe and secure handling of goods.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness and general upkeep of the vehicle's cab and trailer, presenting a professional image at all times.
  • Reporting all accidents, incidents, or near misses immediately to the transport manager in line with established company procedure.
  • Participating in mandatory driver training, CPC courses, and performance reviews to maintain professional standards and support continuous development.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid HGV Class 1 (C+E) Driving Licence.
  • Valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) card.
  • Valid Digital Tachograph Card.
  • In-depth, practical knowledge of EU and UK driver hours regulations and the Working Time Directive.
  • Experience with various trailer types (e.g., Curtain Siders, Refrigerated units, Flatbeds, Box Trailers).
  • Proficiency in using digital tachographs and transport-related handheld devices or applications.
  • A clean driving licence is highly preferred (ideally with no more than 6 penalty points for insurance purposes).
  • Demonstrable experience in performing daily vehicle walk-around checks and accurate defect reporting.

Soft Skills

  • Excellent time management and punctuality, with a proven track record of reliability and dependability.
  • Strong communication skills for effective liaison with the transport team, warehouse staff, and customers.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • No formal education is required beyond the necessary vocational driving qualifications.

Preferred Education:

  • GCSEs in English and Maths (or equivalent) are advantageous for communication and numeracy skills.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • N/A - Focus is on vocational qualifications (C+E, CPC).

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 1-2 years of commercial HGV Class 1 driving experience is typically required.

Preferred:

  • 2+ years of continuous, recent HGV Class 1 driving experience with a clean, verifiable record. Experience in a similar sector (e.g., general haulage, temperature-controlled, pallet network) is a significant plus.
