Primary Functions

  • Take full ownership of the geometric design for urban and rural highway projects, meticulously developing horizontal and vertical alignments, superelevation, and cross-sections to ensure driver safety and comfort.
  • Lead the comprehensive analysis and design of storm drainage systems, including the hydraulic modeling of culverts, storm sewers, and detention/retention ponds to manage stormwater runoff effectively.
  • Develop complete and detailed sets of construction drawings (PS&E - Plans, Specifications, and Estimates), ensuring every detail is captured for a seamless bidding and construction process.
  • Create and manage intricate 3D corridor models using advanced design software like OpenRoads Designer or Civil 3D, which serve as the digital backbone for the entire project lifecycle.
  • Conduct thorough design calculations for roadway geometrics, earthwork volumes, drainage systems, and structural components, providing a robust analytical foundation for all design decisions.
  • Meticulously prepare and review detailed construction cost estimates and quantity take-offs, providing clients with accurate budget forecasting and project cost control.
  • Author and compile comprehensive technical reports, feasibility studies, and design documentation that clearly communicate complex engineering concepts to clients, stakeholders, and regulatory agencies.
  • Ensure all design work rigorously adheres to the latest standards and guidelines from authorities such as AASHTO, FHWA, and state-specific Departments of Transportation (DOT).
  • Masterfully develop detailed Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) and traffic control plans that ensure worker and public safety during all phases of construction.
  • Actively coordinate with a wide array of disciplines, including structural, geotechnical, environmental, surveying, and utility teams, to create a fully integrated and conflict-free design.
  • Serve as a key technical liaison during client meetings and public involvement sessions, adeptly presenting design concepts and addressing concerns from stakeholders with clarity and confidence.
  • Perform detailed reviews of shop drawings and contractor submittals during the construction phase to guarantee compliance with the approved design plans and specifications.
  • Proactively respond to Requests for Information (RFIs) from contractors, providing timely and accurate clarifications to prevent construction delays.
  • Conduct on-site field visits to assess existing conditions, verify survey data, and monitor construction progress, bridging the gap between the design office and the field.
  • Spearhead the development of right-of-way and easement acquisition plans, coordinating with legal and real estate professionals to secure the necessary land for a project.
  • Oversee the design of pavement markings, signage, and roadway lighting systems to enhance navigational clarity and safety for all road users.
  • Assist project managers in developing project scopes, schedules, and budgets, contributing to the successful proposal and management of new engineering work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced CAD Proficiency: Expert-level skill in major civil design software such as Bentley MicroStation, OpenRoads Designer (ORD), or Autodesk AutoCAD Civil 3D.
  • Geometric Design Expertise: Deep understanding of AASHTO policies (especially the "Green Book") for horizontal/vertical alignments, superelevation, and sight distance.
  • Hydrology & Hydraulics: Competency in drainage design and modeling using software like StormCAD, HEC-RAS, HY-8, or similar tools.
  • PS&E Package Development: Proven ability to assemble a complete, bid-ready set of Plans, Specifications, and Estimates for transportation projects.
  • State DOT Standards: Familiarity with the specific design manuals, standard drawings, and procedures of at least one state Department of Transportation.
  • Cost Estimating: Skill in performing detailed quantity take-offs and preparing accurate construction cost estimates using spreadsheets or specialized software.
  • 3D Corridor Modeling: Ability to create, manage, and analyze complex 3D roadway models for earthwork calculations, visualization, and clash detection.
  • Traffic Control Design: Knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and experience creating phasing and staging plans.
