Primary Functions

Operate heavy, motorized equipment used in highway construction and maintenance, including but not limited to motor graders, bulldozers, front-end loaders, asphalt pavers, and rollers, with an exceptional level of precision and control.
Perform fine-grade finishing to specified tolerances, ensuring the road surface is perfectly sloped for drainage and smooth for vehicle transit, often using GPS and laser guidance systems.
Manipulate levers, pedals, and steering mechanisms to guide heavy machinery in clearing, excavating, and grading earth for new roadbeds and shoulders.
Read and interpret project blueprints, grade stakes, and electronic plans to determine the exact placement of slopes, elevations, and alignments for road construction.
Execute the precise spreading and laying of asphalt or other paving materials to required depths and smoothness, monitoring material temperature and consistency for optimal results.
Conduct pre-operational safety checks and walk-around inspections on all equipment, identifying and reporting any mechanical issues, fluid leaks, or potential hazards before starting work.
Perform routine and preventative maintenance on machinery, such as lubricating fittings, cleaning tracks or tires, and checking fluid levels to ensure equipment longevity and operational readiness.
Collaborate closely with ground crews, surveyors, and foremen through hand signals and radio communication to ensure safe and coordinated operations on a busy job site.

Skillfully maneuver heavy equipment in close proximity to live traffic, other workers, and existing structures, demonstrating superior spatial awareness and judgment.
Document daily activities, including hours of equipment operation, maintenance performed, and any unusual site conditions, on daily work reports.
Participate in job site safety briefings (toolbox talks) and contribute to identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with the work plan.
Assist in the loading and unloading of heavy equipment from transport trailers, ensuring proper securing and safe transport procedures are followed.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)
