Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Accurately accession and verify patient and specimen information, ensuring 100% end-to-end integrity from receipt to final report generation.
- Perform complex tissue processing, including fixation, dehydration, and clearing, for a diverse range of surgical and biopsy specimens using automated tissue processors.
- Expertly embed processed tissues into paraffin blocks, ensuring precise orientation as dictated by tissue type and pathologist's instructions to guarantee optimal diagnostic value.
- Skillfully perform microtomy on paraffin-embedded tissue blocks, consistently producing high-quality, wrinkle-free ribbons at specified thicknesses for microscopic examination.
- Execute routine Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining procedures, both manually and on automated platforms, ensuring consistent and high-quality staining results for primary diagnosis.
- Perform a wide array of complex special stains and histochemical procedures to visualize specific tissue structures, microorganisms, or pigments as requested by the pathology team.
- Conduct advanced immunohistochemical (IHC) and in-situ hybridization (ISH) staining procedures on automated systems (e.g., Ventana, Leica), including antibody titrations and validation.
- Operate and maintain a variety of sophisticated laboratory equipment, including microtomes, cryostats, tissue processors, and automated stainers, performing routine QC and troubleshooting.
- Prepare, cut, and stain intraoperative frozen section specimens with speed and precision to provide critical real-time diagnostic information to surgeons.
- Meticulously label slides and cassettes with an exceptional level of accuracy to maintain positive patient identification throughout every stage of the histological process.
- Prepare and maintain all necessary reagents, staining solutions, and buffers according to established laboratory procedures, ensuring their quality and stability.
- Adhere strictly to all laboratory safety protocols, including the proper handling and disposal of hazardous chemicals, reagents, and biohazardous materials.
- Meticulously document all procedures, quality control logs, and maintenance records in accordance with CAP, CLIA, and other regulatory agency guidelines.
- Proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve technical problems with instrumentation, staining artifacts, or tissue processing to minimize delays and ensure quality.
- Assist in the gross examination and description of surgical specimens under the supervision of a Pathologist or Pathologists' Assistant.
- Manage the archival, storage, and retrieval of paraffin blocks and slides, maintaining an organized system for future studies or review.
- Utilize the Laboratory Information System (LIS) for case tracking, data entry, and generating reports, ensuring seamless workflow and data integrity.
- Participate in the evaluation, validation, and implementation of new laboratory procedures, technologies, and staining protocols to advance the lab's capabilities.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient workstation to promote a safe and productive laboratory environment.
- Engage in required continuing education activities to maintain certification and stay current with advancements and best practices in the field of histotechnology.
- Assist in managing laboratory supply inventory by monitoring stock levels, identifying needs, and communicating orders to ensure uninterrupted operations.
- Provide guidance and support in training new employees, students, or junior technicians in various histology techniques and laboratory protocols.

- Completion of a NAACLS-accredited Histotechnologist (HTL) program.
