Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Expertly install a diverse range of trailer hitches, including receiver hitches, fifth-wheel hitches, and gooseneck hitches, according to manufacturer specifications and specific vehicle requirements.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot complex issues with vehicle towing systems, including electrical faults, structural problems, and malfunctioning accessories.
  • Perform custom wiring on a wide variety of vehicles to support trailer lights, electric brakes, and auxiliary power systems, ensuring all connections are secure and weatherproof.
  • Install and calibrate electronic brake controllers, ensuring seamless integration with the vehicle's braking system for optimal towing safety.
  • Mount and install various towing accessories such as weight distribution systems, sway control devices, T-connectors, and transmission coolers.
  • Conduct thorough pre-installation inspections of vehicle frames and undercarriages to assess structural integrity and identify any potential obstacles or modifications needed.
  • Perform precise cutting, grinding, and drilling on vehicle frames or components as required for custom hitch installations, while maintaining structural integrity.
  • Interpret and follow detailed installation instructions, diagrams, and vehicle-specific schematics to ensure accurate and safe component placement.
  • Advise customers on the appropriate hitch and towing equipment for their specific vehicle and towing needs, explaining load capacities and safety features.
  • Conduct comprehensive post-installation quality and safety checks, including torqueing all fasteners to specification and testing all electrical functions.
  • Perform repairs and maintenance on existing hitches and wiring systems, including replacing worn components and correcting faulty wiring.
  • Utilize a variety of hand tools, power tools, and specialized equipment such as hydraulic lifts, welders, and multimeters safely and effectively.
  • Fabricate custom brackets or modify components when necessary to complete unique or challenging installations on non-standard vehicles.
  • Stay current with the latest towing products, installation techniques, and vehicle models to maintain a high level of expertise.
  • Document all services performed, including parts used and labor time, on work orders accurately and comprehensively for billing and service history.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment in the service bay, adhering to all company and industry safety protocols.
  • Perform light welding (typically MIG) for frame modifications or custom applications as needed to ensure a secure and durable installation.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve CAN bus and other modern vehicle electrical system interface issues that can arise during wiring installation.
  • Manage installation workflow to meet customer appointment times and complete jobs efficiently without compromising quality or safety.
  • Provide clear and concise explanations of the work performed to customers, demonstrating functionality and providing essential usage and safety tips.

  • Assist in maintaining accurate inventory levels of hitches, wiring kits, and other towing accessories by reporting usage and identifying low-stock items.
  • Support the service team by assisting other technicians with complex installations or high-volume workloads to ensure shop efficiency.

  • Responsible for the general maintenance and upkeep of shop tools and equipment, reporting any malfunctions or needs for repair.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Trailer Hitch Installation: Proficiency in installing receiver, fifth-wheel, and gooseneck hitches on a variety of vehicle types.
  • 12-Volt Electrical Diagnostics: Strong ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair automotive electrical systems, including shorts, open circuits, and voltage drops.
  • Trailer Wiring: Expertise in installing T-connectors and hard-wiring vehicles for 4-way, 5-way, and 7-way trailer plugs.
  • Brake Controller Installation: Skilled in mounting, wiring, and setting up various types of proportional and time-based brake controllers.
  • Use of Hand and Power Tools: Competent and safe operation of drills, grinders, impact wrenches, torque wrenches, and other essential shop tools.
  • Reading Technical Diagrams: Ability to read and interpret installation manuals, wiring schematics, and mechanical blueprints.
  • Vehicle Systems Knowledge: Solid understanding of automotive frames, suspension, and braking systems.
  • Light Welding & Fabrication (MIG/Arc): Ability to perform basic welding and fabrication for custom brackets and frame modifications is highly desirable.
  • Component Assembly: Mechanical aptitude for assembling and fitting multi-part systems like weight distribution hitches.
  • Diagnostic Tool Proficiency: Experience using multimeters, test lights, and other diagnostic tools to verify electrical system integrity.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.

Preferred Education:

  • Vocational or Technical School Certificate in Automotive Technology, Welding, or a related field.
  • ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) certifications are a strong plus.

Experience Requirements
