Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, plan, and execute high-tempo, organized, and effective daily practice sessions focused on individual skill refinement, tactical systems, and team cohesion.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive game plans and strategies tailored to each opponent, including conducting detailed pre-scouting and video breakdown sessions.
  • Lead all aspects of on-ice and off-ice training, including systems play, special teams, skill work, and collaborating with strength staff on conditioning programs.
  • Direct all phases of the recruiting process, from identifying and evaluating prospective players at games and showcases to managing communications and official visits.
  • Provide constructive, individualized feedback to players using video analysis, statistical data, and one-on-one meetings to foster their athletic and personal development.
  • Actively mentor players on their academic commitments, personal conduct, and character development, serving as a guide for their life both on and off the ice.
  • Establish and enforce team standards, policies, and disciplinary measures to cultivate a culture of accountability, respect, and professionalism.
  • Foster a positive, competitive, and inclusive team environment that prioritizes sportsmanship, hard work, and the overall well-being of each team member.
  • Manage the selection, supervision, and professional development of assistant coaches, support staff, and volunteers, delegating responsibilities to build a cohesive coaching unit.
  • Serve as the primary spokesperson and public face of the hockey program, building and maintaining positive relationships with media, alumni, parents, and community stakeholders.
  • Ensure strict compliance with all rules and regulations set forth by the governing league, conference, and national bodies (e.g., NCAA, USA Hockey, Hockey Canada).
  • Oversee the strategic scheduling of non-conference games and practices to create a competitive season that maximizes team development and ranking potential.

Secondary Functions

  • Manage the team's operational budget, including expense tracking for travel, equipment purchasing, and recruiting, ensuring fiscal responsibility.
  • Coordinate with academic advisors and support services to monitor the academic progress and eligibility of all players, intervening with support when necessary.
  • Act as a program ambassador by participating in public relations activities, community service events, and alumni functions to build support and visibility.
  • Organize and execute fundraising initiatives, summer camps, and development clinics to supplement the program's resources and enhance community outreach.
  • Collaborate with athletic training and medical staff to implement player health and safety protocols, including injury prevention and emergency action plans.
  • Manage the procurement, inventory, maintenance, and distribution of all team equipment, apparel, and supplies.
  • Prepare and submit all necessary administrative reports to the athletic department regarding rosters, compliance, budget, and program outcomes.
  • Stay current with emerging coaching techniques, technologies, and hockey analytics to ensure the program remains innovative and competitive.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Advanced Tactical Knowledge: Expert understanding of modern hockey systems, including offensive and defensive zone strategies, special teams schemes, and neutral zone play.
  • Video Analysis Proficiency: Skilled in using video coaching software (e.g., Hudl, Steva, XOS) for game breakdown, player feedback, and scouting.
  • Player Evaluation & Scouting: Proven ability to identify talent, project player potential, and understand the nuances of the recruiting landscape.
  • Coaching Certification: Possession of high-level coaching credentials from a national governing body, such as USA Hockey (Level 4/5) or Hockey Canada High Performance.
  • Budget Management: Competency in developing and managing a team or program budget, including tracking expenses and allocating resources effectively.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Certification: Certified and prepared to respond to medical emergencies in a training or competition environment.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Demonstrated success in recruiting, developing, and retaining high-character student-athletes who have achieved both academic and athletic success.
  • Proven experience managing a coaching staff and overseeing a program's operational budget.
