The individual in this role is entrusted with the safe and timely transport of goods from a local distribution center to residential and commercial locations. Success in this role is measured by on-time delivery performance, the condition of delivered packages, adherence to safety protocols, and the ability to provide a positive and professional customer experience. This role is physically demanding and requires a high degree of independence, problem-solving ability, and time management.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Safely and efficiently load the delivery vehicle with pre-sorted packages, ensuring proper organization, secure placement, and weight distribution to optimize the delivery route and prevent damage.
  • Operate a company-provided vehicle (typically a cargo or step van) in a safe, courteous, and law-abiding manner, adhering to all DOT regulations, traffic laws, and company driving policies at all times.
  • Conduct thorough daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, checking tires, fluids, lights, brakes, and other critical systems, and immediately report any maintenance issues or safety concerns to management.
  • Utilize a handheld scanner or mobile device to accurately scan all packages at various stages—including loading, delivery attempts, and final delivery—to maintain real-time, accurate tracking information for customers and the company.
  • Navigate a predetermined, high-density delivery route using GPS and routing software, making intelligent, real-time adjustments as necessary to account for traffic, construction, or other unforeseen delays.
  • Perform door-to-door delivery of a high volume of packages to residential and commercial locations, ensuring each package reaches the correct recipient in its original, undamaged condition.
  • Meticulously follow specific customer delivery instructions provided in the system, such as leaving packages in a designated safe spot, obtaining a signature, verifying age for restricted items, or handing off directly to the customer.
  • Act as the primary point of contact and a professional brand ambassador during deliveries, providing friendly, helpful, and positive customer service to enhance the overall customer experience.
  • Troubleshoot and problem-solve on-the-go delivery issues, such as incorrect addresses, inaccessible locations, or customer unavailability, and communicate effectively with dispatch to find a resolution.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and presentable vehicle, both inside and out, to reflect company standards and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Handle all packages with care, regardless of size or weight, and be capable of lifting and carrying packages weighing up to 50 lbs, sometimes requiring movement up and down stairs.
  • Manage the end-of-day process by returning all undelivered packages, collected signatures, and company equipment (scanner, keys, fuel card) to the distribution center.
  • Consistently meet or exceed performance metrics for on-time delivery rates, successful delivery attempts, and customer satisfaction scores.
  • Adhere strictly to all company safety protocols and procedures, including safe lifting techniques, proper vehicle entry/exit, and situational awareness to prevent accidents or injuries.
  • Maintain constant communication with the dispatch team, providing updates on route progress, reporting delays, and responding to any in-route communications promptly.
  • Securely manage and account for all company property, including the vehicle, handheld device, fuel card, and the packages themselves, throughout the entire shift.
  • Assist in rescuing other drivers by taking a portion of their packages if you finish your own route early, demonstrating a collaborative, team-player attitude.
  • Complete all required delivery paperwork and digital logs accurately and in a timely fashion, ensuring a clear record of all delivery activities.
  • Adapt to varying routes and seasonal volume increases, demonstrating flexibility and a willingness to work overtime, weekends, or holidays as business needs dictate.
  • De-brief with supervisors at the end of a shift to discuss any route challenges, customer feedback, or opportunities for operational improvement.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the warehouse with sorting packages or loading other vehicles during peak times or when delivery routes are complete.
  • Provide on-the-ground feedback on route efficiency, customer concerns, and delivery challenges to contribute to the continuous improvement of logistics operations.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and fellow drivers to report progress, share information about traffic or access issues, and support team success.
  • Participate in mandatory daily team huddles, safety briefings, and periodic training sessions to stay updated on company policies and best practices.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Valid Driver's License & Clean Driving Record: A non-negotiable requirement to operate company vehicles legally and safely.
  • Vehicle Operation (Cargo/Step Vans): Proven ability to comfortably and safely maneuver larger commercial vehicles in various weather and traffic conditions.
  • Route Navigation & GPS Software Proficiency: Skill in using handheld devices and GPS applications (e.g., Google Maps, Waze, proprietary apps) for efficient routing.
  • Handheld Scanner/Device Operation: Competency in using technology for tracking, communication, and logging delivery information.
  • Safe Lifting Techniques: Knowledge and application of proper body mechanics for lifting, carrying, and setting down packages of varying weights to prevent injury.

Typical Experience Range:

  • 0 - 2 years. No professional driving experience is required for many entry-level positions, as training is provided.

  • Experience working in a customer-facing position that demonstrates strong service and communication skills.
