Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and monitor automated or semi-automated hopper systems, including conveyors, augers, and pneumatic lines, to feed raw materials into production machinery.
  • Accurately weigh, measure, and mix materials according to detailed batch records and production formulas to ensure product specifications are met.
  • Regularly monitor gauges, dials, control panels, and computer screens to verify that material flow, temperature, and pressure are within safe and effective operating limits.
  • Conduct visual inspections of materials before and during the loading process to identify contaminants, inconsistencies, or foreign objects.
  • Adjust machine settings and material flow rates as necessary to correct any processing issues and maintain a continuous supply to the production line.
  • Perform routine clean-out procedures for hoppers, chutes, and related equipment between production runs or material changes to prevent cross-contamination.
  • Safely operate mobile equipment, such as forklifts, pallet jacks, or front-end loaders, to transport raw materials from storage areas to the hopper loading stations.
  • Complete and maintain accurate production logs, batch records, and inventory sheets, documenting material usage, lot numbers, and operational data.
  • Troubleshoot minor operational problems with the hopper system, such as blockages or jams, and perform basic adjustments to resolve them.
  • Strictly adhere to all company safety policies, including Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures, when cleaning, servicing, or clearing equipment.
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness and organization in the immediate work area, ensuring a safe and efficient operational environment.
  • Collect material samples at various stages of the process as required by the Quality Assurance team for laboratory testing.
  • Communicate effectively with machine operators, shift supervisors, and maintenance personnel regarding equipment status, material levels, and production needs.
  • Manage the storage and rotation of raw materials (FIFO - First-In, First-Out) to ensure material quality and freshness.
  • Inspect and verify the proper connection of hoses, pipes, and transfer lines before initiating material transfer to prevent spills or leaks.
  • Respond promptly to system alarms, diagnosing the cause and taking appropriate corrective action according to established procedures.
  • Ensure that all empty containers, such as bags, drums, or super sacks, are properly disposed of or stored for recycling.
  • Monitor inventory levels of raw materials in the hoppers and silos, notifying the supervisor or materials team when replenishment is needed.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist maintenance technicians with preventative maintenance tasks and more extensive repairs on hopper systems and associated equipment.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement initiatives and team meetings, providing valuable feedback on process efficiency and safety.
  • Provide on-the-job training and guidance to new operators, sharing knowledge of standard operating procedures and safety best practices.
  • Support periodic physical inventory counts of raw materials and production supplies within the facility.

  • Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating industrial machinery, including control panels, conveyors, and automated feed systems.
  • Forklift Certification: A valid license and demonstrated skill in safely operating a forklift for material transport.
  • Basic Mechanical Aptitude: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment issues, like clearing jams or making simple adjustments.
  • Mathematical Skills: Competency in basic arithmetic, including addition, subtraction, and multiplication, for accurately measuring and recording materials.
  • Knowledge of Safety Procedures: Thorough understanding of manufacturing safety protocols, especially Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) and proper manual handling techniques.
  • Computer Literacy: Basic ability to interact with HMI (Human-Machine Interface) panels and enter data into production tracking software.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 1-3 years of experience in a manufacturing, production, or agricultural processing environment.

Preferred: Direct experience as a Machine Operator, Blender, or Material Handler in an industry that utilizes hopper/silo systems (e.g., food and beverage, plastics, chemical, or minerals).
