Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Independently set up, program at the control, and operate large-capacity CNC Horizontal Boring Mills (e.g., Giddings & Lewis, Toshiba, PAMA, Doosan) to perform precision boring, milling, drilling, and tapping operations.
  • Interpret complex engineering drawings, technical blueprints, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) specifications to determine machining requirements and operational sequences.
  • Select, install, and align appropriate cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and fixtures on the machine, making adjustments to tool offsets and wear compensation as needed.
  • Load, secure, and align large, heavy, and often irregularly shaped workpieces onto the machine table using overhead cranes, slings, chains, clamps, and jacks, ensuring absolute stability.
  • Write, edit, and optimize CNC programs directly at the machine control (primarily using G-code and M-code), adjusting speeds, feeds, and tool paths to ensure quality and efficiency.
  • Perform first-off inspections and in-process quality checks using a wide range of precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, bore gauges, calipers, height gauges, and CMM arms.
  • Execute complex machining operations on a variety of materials, from standard steels and aluminum to exotic alloys, superalloys, and hardened metals.
  • Monitor machine operations closely, listening for unusual noises and observing cutting action to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and intervene immediately to correct issues.
  • Calculate and set machine controls to position tools in relationship to the workpiece and to regulate factors such as cutting speed, feed rate, and depth of cut.
  • Perform multi-axis machining, including contouring and complex surfacing, on large components that may require multiple setups and re-orientations.
  • Troubleshoot machining problems, such as tool chatter, poor surface finish, or dimensional inaccuracies, and implement effective solutions.
  • Deburr and finish machined parts to meet surface finish requirements specified on engineering drawings.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including setup sheets, inspection reports, and production logs, to ensure traceability and process consistency.
  • Perform routine operator-level machine maintenance, such as cleaning the machine, checking fluid levels, and lubricating moving parts, to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

Secondary Functions

  • Collaborate closely with the quality assurance department to verify dimensional accuracy and resolve any non-conformances.
  • Provide constructive feedback to engineers and CNC programmers to improve manufacturability, reduce cycle times, and enhance part quality.
  • Assist in the training and mentorship of apprentice machinists and junior operators on safe and effective machine operation.
  • Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives, suggesting process enhancements to improve safety, quality, and productivity.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area, adhering to all company safety protocols and 5S principles.
  • Manage tooling inventory at the machine, ensuring that required tools are available, in good condition, and properly stored.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, forklifts, and other material handling equipment for moving large workpieces and fixtures.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CNC Control Proficiency: Expert-level knowledge of at least one major CNC control system, such as Heidenhain, Fanuc, Siemens, or G&L 8000.
  • Blueprint Reading & GD&T: Advanced ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings, schematics, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing symbols.
  • Precision Metrology: Skilled in the use of a wide array of precision measuring tools, including large-diameter micrometers, vernier calipers, bore gauges, depth gauges, and indicators.
  • G-Code & M-Code Programming: Ability to write, read, and edit CNC programs at the machine to control tool paths, speeds, and feeds.
  • Tooling & Fixturing: Deep knowledge of cutting tools, tool holders, and work-holding strategies for large-scale machining applications.
  • Crane and Rigging: Certified or proficient in the safe operation of overhead cranes and proper rigging techniques for lifting and positioning heavy, asymmetrical loads.
  • Machine Setup & Alignment: Expertise in accurately setting up and aligning large workpieces using indicators, lasers, or other alignment tools.
  • Feed & Speed Calculation: Ability to calculate optimal cutting speeds and feed rates for various materials and cutting tools to achieve desired finish and tool life.
  • Basic Machine Maintenance: Understanding of preventative maintenance tasks required to keep a large boring mill in good working order.
  • CAD/CAM Software Familiarity: Basic ability to view and interrogate 3D models using software like SolidWorks, Mastercam, or Vericut is a strong plus.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (AAS) in Machine Tool Technology, CNC Machining, or a related technical field.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • A minimum of 5-10 years of hands-on experience as a CNC Machinist, with at least 3-5 of those years specifically dedicated to operating Horizontal Boring Mills.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience machining large, complex components (e.g., weighing over 5 tons) for demanding industries such as oil & gas, aerospace, defense, or heavy industrial machinery.
  • Proven experience with large-envelope, multi-axis (4 or 5-axis) horizontal boring equipment.
  • Specific experience with conversational programming or advanced features on Heidenhain or Siemens controls.
