Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct in-depth research and analysis of pedigrees, performance records, and genetic markers to inform strategic breeding decisions and select optimal stallion-mare pairings.
  • Manage the complete reproductive lifecycle of broodmares, including tracking estrous cycles, coordinating with veterinarians for ultrasounds and hormonal treatments, and determining optimal timing for breeding.
  • Oversee and manage the care and handling of stallions, including collection of semen for artificial insemination, evaluation of semen quality, and maintaining their physical and mental well-being.
  • Perform or assist with advanced reproductive techniques, such as artificial insemination (AI), embryo transfer, and monitoring for pregnancy confirmation.
  • Provide comprehensive prenatal care for pregnant mares, monitoring their health, nutrition, and condition throughout the full gestation period to ensure a healthy outcome.
  • Attend and manage the foaling process, providing critical assistance to the mare during birth and administering immediate, life-sustaining neonatal care to the newborn foal.
  • Develop, implement, and meticulously document a comprehensive herd health program, including scheduling and administering vaccinations, deworming protocols, and dental care in collaboration with veterinarians.
  • Formulate and manage customized nutrition and feeding programs for all classes of horses on the farm, including broodmares, stallions, foals, and yearlings, to meet their specific dietary needs.
  • Supervise the critical weaning process, ensuring a low-stress transition for both mare and foal while closely monitoring the foal's health and adjustment.
  • Implement a structured program for the early handling and ground training of young horses, including halter breaking, leading, and teaching basic manners to build a foundation for future training.
  • Prepare young stock (weanlings and yearlings) for public auctions, private sale, or breed inspections, which includes grooming, conditioning, and training for presentation.
  • Maintain exceptionally detailed and accurate records for all horses, covering breeding dates, health treatments, pedigrees, parentage verification, and developmental milestones.
  • Manage the timely and accurate registration of all foals with the relevant national and international breed associations, ensuring all paperwork and DNA requirements are met.
  • Drive the marketing and sales of horses by creating compelling sales materials, managing online listings, communicating with prospective buyers, and showing horses to clients.
  • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the breeding facility, including staff scheduling, stable management, turn-out schedules, and maintenance of pastures and fencing.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise a team of grooms, stable hands, and other farm staff, fostering a safe and efficient work environment.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and coordinator for external equine professionals, including veterinarians, farriers, nutritionists, and transportation services.
  • Develop and manage the annual budget for the breeding operation, tracking expenses, forecasting revenue, and making data-driven decisions to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Remain current with the latest industry research, trends, and technological advancements in equine reproduction, genetics, and veterinary care through continuing education.
  • Ensure the farm operates in strict compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations, as well as upholding the highest standards of animal welfare and husbandry.
  • Critically evaluate the conformation, movement, and temperament of foals and young horses to assess their potential for specific disciplines and to refine future breeding choices.
  • Manage biosecurity protocols for the entire facility to prevent the introduction and spread of infectious diseases among the horse population.

  • Represent the farm and its breeding program at public auctions, industry conferences, competitions, and other equine events to build brand recognition and network.
  • Foster and maintain strong, positive relationships with clients, boarders, and potential buyers through regular communication and excellent customer service.

Educational Background
