Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform a comprehensive range of landscape maintenance tasks, including precise planting, thorough weeding, and the application of mulch and soil amendments to garden beds.
- Execute proper horticultural pruning techniques on a variety of shrubs, small trees, and herbaceous perennials to promote healthy growth, structural integrity, and desired aesthetics.
- Operate and conduct routine maintenance on a wide array of landscaping equipment, such as commercial-grade mowers, string trimmers, edgers, leaf blowers, and tillers, ensuring safe and effective use.
- Install new plant material, including trees, shrubs, perennials, and seasonal annuals, according to detailed landscape plans and horticultural best practices.
- Monitor, adjust, and perform basic repairs on irrigation and sprinkler systems to ensure efficient water distribution and maintain optimal plant health across all landscaped areas.
- Identify common weeds, pests, and plant diseases, and implement appropriate and approved control measures, including mechanical removal and chemical applications.
- Prepare planting beds for new installations through cultivation, grading, and incorporation of compost or other organic matter to create ideal growing conditions.
- Participate in seasonal landscape activities, including spring clean-up, leaf and debris removal in the fall, and winterization of plants and irrigation systems.
- Assist in the installation of hardscape features, such as pathways, patios, and retaining walls, by preparing sites, moving materials, and supporting skilled masons.
- Perform turfgrass management duties, including mowing, aeration, overseeding, and fertilization to maintain a lush and healthy lawn.
- Transplant trees, shrubs, and perennials as directed, ensuring proper handling techniques to minimize stress and promote successful re-establishment.
- Apply fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides safely and effectively, following all label instructions and safety protocols to protect personal, public, and environmental health.
- Water plant material using hoses, watering cans, or automated systems, assessing the specific needs of different plant species and environmental conditions.
- Cultivate and turn soil to improve aeration and water penetration, and remove competing weeds from planting areas to support plant vitality.
- Deadhead and thin perennials and annuals as required to encourage continuous blooming and vigorous growth throughout the season.
