Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Meticulously sort all incoming soiled linens, textiles, and garments from various hospital departments, separating items by fabric type, color, and level of contamination to ensure proper washing procedures.
  • Operate large-capacity, computer-controlled commercial washing machines and dryers, selecting appropriate cycles, temperatures, and chemical formulas for different linen types to achieve optimal cleanliness and sanitation.
  • Adhere strictly to universal precautions and hospital infection control policies when handling contaminated laundry, utilizing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Accurately weigh soiled linen loads before washing and clean linen loads after drying to maintain precise production records and monitor workflow efficiency.
  • Load and unload industrial-sized washing machines and dryers, ensuring machines are not overloaded and are operating according to manufacturer and safety guidelines.
  • Inspect clean linen for stains, tears, or excessive wear, segregating damaged items for mending or disposal according to established departmental protocols.
  • Operate commercial flatwork ironers, presses, and folding machines to professionally finish sheets, gowns, and other textiles, ensuring they are ready for patient use.
  • Neatly and accurately fold, stack, and assemble clean linen into standardized packs or onto designated carts for various departments, such as patient floors, operating rooms, and emergency services.
  • Manage the distribution of clean linen by loading and transporting large, heavy carts to designated clean linen closets and storage areas throughout the hospital complex.
  • Collect and return empty linen carts from user departments to the laundry facility for cleaning and reuse, maintaining a smooth and continuous supply chain.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment in the laundry facility, including sweeping floors, wiping down equipment, and removing lint and debris.
  • Monitor and manage the inventory of laundry chemicals and supplies, reporting any shortages to the supervisor to prevent disruptions in service.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance on laundry equipment, such as cleaning lint traps and filters, and promptly report any malfunctions or needs for repair to the maintenance department.
  • Document and maintain accurate daily logs of laundry activities, including poundage processed, number of carts distributed, and any equipment issues encountered.
  • Respond to urgent or ad-hoc requests for specific linen items from clinical departments, demonstrating a customer-service-oriented approach.
  • Safely handle and dispense industrial-strength cleaning and sanitizing agents, following all Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) guidelines.
  • Prepare and package specialty linen packs required for surgical procedures and other specific clinical needs, ensuring all components are present and correctly assembled.
  • Assist in conducting periodic physical inventory counts of all circulating linen to help manage assets and forecast future purchasing needs.
  • Ensure the separation and proper handling of patient personal clothing from the general hospital linen stream when applicable.
  • Participate actively in departmental quality assurance initiatives by providing feedback and suggestions for process improvements to enhance safety and efficiency.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with periodic deep cleaning of the laundry facility and all associated equipment as scheduled by the department supervisor.
  • Provide support to the Environmental Services (EVS) department during periods of high demand or staff shortages as directed.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and mandatory hospital-wide safety, fire prevention, and infection control training sessions.
  • Report any observed safety hazards or potential compliance issues within the work area to the shift supervisor immediately.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
