Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely and efficiently transport patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or hospital bed to and from various departments, including Radiology, Physical Therapy, Operating Rooms, and for admission/discharge.
- Meticulously verify patient identity using at least two approved identifiers (e.g., name and date of birth on their wristband) before initiating any transport.
- Communicate effectively with nursing staff and clinicians to confirm patient readiness, any specific transport instructions, and to provide updates upon completion of the transport.
- Skillfully assist clinical staff in the safe transfer of patients between beds, stretchers, chairs, and other surfaces, utilizing proper lifting techniques and patient lift equipment.
- Ensure all accompanying medical equipment, such as IV poles, infusion pumps, and portable oxygen tanks, is properly managed and secured during transport.
- Continuously monitor the patient’s condition and comfort during transport, immediately reporting any signs of distress, pain, or change in status to the nearest clinical staff.
- Proactively respond to transport requests received through our digital dispatch system, pagers, or two-way radios in a timely and prioritized manner.
- Maintain and operate all transport equipment, including wheelchairs, stretchers, and bariatric equipment, ensuring it is in safe, working condition.
- Thoroughly clean and sanitize all transport equipment between each patient use in strict accordance with the hospital’s infection control policies and procedures.
- Accurately maintain a digital or written log of all transport activities, documenting patient details, pick-up/drop-off times, and locations for record-keeping.
- Provide comfort, reassurance, and polite conversation to patients and their families, answering non-clinical questions and enhancing the overall patient experience.
- Adhere strictly to all hospital safety protocols, including patient confidentiality (HIPAA), infection prevention, and emergency response procedures (e.g., Code Blue, Code Red).
- Manage the inventory and flow of portable oxygen tanks, ensuring they are full, properly stored, and readily available for patient transport needs.
- Facilitate the patient discharge process by escorting them and their belongings to the hospital exit or their designated pick-up vehicle.
- Retrieve and return all transport equipment to its designated storage area, ensuring the area remains organized and accessible for the next shift.
- Actively participate in emergency response situations as directed, assisting with patient movement and equipment transport during evacuations or code calls.
- Communicate any potential delays, equipment issues, or logistical problems to the central dispatcher and the requesting unit to manage expectations and workflow.
- Handle the transport of sensitive items, including patient charts, laboratory specimens, and medical records, ensuring they reach their destination securely.
- Perform basic visual inspections on transport equipment at the start of each shift, reporting any need for repair or maintenance to the appropriate department.
- Transport deceased patients with the utmost dignity and respect to the hospital morgue, following established and sensitive protocols.
Secondary Functions
- Restock transport hubs and equipment storage areas with necessary supplies like clean linens, blankets, emesis basins, and sanitary wipes.
- Assist with light clerical duties in the transport or dispatch office during periods of low transport volume.
- Participate actively in departmental meetings, in-service training, and mandatory hospital-wide education on safety and patient care.
- Act as a friendly, helpful resource for patients and visitors who need directions or general information about navigating the facility.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Equipment Operation: Proficiency in operating standard transport equipment, including wheelchairs, stretchers, patient lifts, and bariatric devices.
- Patient Handling: Knowledge of proper body mechanics and safe patient handling/transfer techniques to prevent injury to oneself and the patient.
- Life Support Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification is required or must be obtained shortly after hire.
- Dispatch Systems: Familiarity with using hospital dispatch technology, such as mobile apps, two-way radios, or pager systems.
- Infection Control: A strong understanding of universal precautions, hand hygiene, and equipment sanitation protocols to prevent cross-contamination.
