Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate and monitor induction, electric arc, or cupola furnaces to melt various metals and alloys according to production schedules.
  • Charge furnaces with carefully measured amounts of scrap metal, ingots, and alloying agents to achieve specific metallurgical properties.
  • Skilfully skim dross, slag, and other impurities from the surface of the molten metal bath to ensure a clean and high-quality pour.
  • Monitor and control furnace temperatures and power inputs using pyrometers, control panels, and computer systems to prevent overheating or under-heating.
  • Take samples of molten metal at various stages of the melting process for spectrographic analysis by the quality lab.
  • Interpret lab results and make precise additions of alloys or other materials to the melt to correct the chemical composition and meet strict specifications.
  • Execute the tapping of furnaces, carefully controlling the flow of molten metal into pre-heated ladles for transport.
  • Safely operate overhead cranes, hoists, and other heavy equipment to transport large, heavy ladles of molten metal from the furnace to the pouring line.
  • Pour molten metal from ladles into molds with a steady hand and keen judgment to ensure complete filling without spillage or defects.
  • Visually inspect molds and pouring equipment before each use to identify any potential defects or safety hazards.
  • Strictly adhere to all company and industry safety protocols, including the mandatory use of specialized personal protective equipment (PPE) such as aluminized coats, hoods, and heat-resistant gloves.
  • Maintain and perform routine repairs on the refractory lining of furnaces and ladles to ensure their integrity and extend their service life.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve operational issues with furnaces, ladles, and related equipment to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.
  • Coordinate pouring activities with the molding and shakeout departments to ensure a smooth and efficient production workflow.
  • Maintain detailed and accurate operational logs, recording melt times, temperatures, alloy additions, and any deviations from standard procedures.
  • Regulate the flow of cooling water and gases through furnace systems to maintain optimal operating conditions and prevent equipment damage.
  • Assist in the setup and preparation of the pouring floor, ensuring all tools, materials, and safety equipment are in place before a melt begins.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in the knockout or shakeout process, where castings are separated from the sand molds after cooling.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks on melting equipment, such as lubricating parts, checking connections, and cleaning components.
  • Maintain a high standard of housekeeping in the melt shop and surrounding areas to prevent fire hazards and create a safe working environment.
  • Participate actively in continuous improvement programs and safety meetings, offering suggestions to enhance operational efficiency and workplace safety.
  • Mentor and provide on-the-job training to new or less-experienced team members on safe operating procedures and quality standards.
  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis related to melt performance and material usage.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by providing accurate operational data.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate data needs into engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning and agile ceremonies within the data engineering team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Furnace Operation: Proficient in operating induction, electric arc, or similar industrial furnaces.
  • Molten Metal Handling: Expertise in safely tapping, transporting, and pouring molten ferrous and/or non-ferrous metals.
  • Overhead Crane Operation: Certified or highly experienced in operating cab- or pendant-controlled overhead cranes for heavy lifts.
  • Forklift Operation: Skilled in operating forklifts for material handling in a busy industrial environment.
  • Metallurgy Fundamentals: Basic understanding of metal properties, alloying, and the effects of temperature on metal chemistry.
  • Reading Technical Instruments: Ability to accurately read and interpret gauges, pyrometers, and digital control panels.
  • Refractory Maintenance: Knowledge of applying, patching, and repairing refractory materials used in furnaces and ladles.
