Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Safely operate and navigate houseboats of various sizes through designated waterways, adhering to all maritime laws, inland navigation rules, and company safety protocols.
- Conduct comprehensive pre-departure and post-arrival safety checks on all vessel systems, including engines, navigation equipment, safety gear, and onboard utilities.
- Provide guests with a thorough and engaging orientation on houseboat operations, safety procedures, and emergency protocols before each charter begins.
- Masterfully pilot the vessel during docking, mooring, and anchoring procedures, often in challenging weather, currents, or crowded marina conditions.
- Act as the primary point of contact for guests throughout their journey, professionally addressing inquiries, resolving issues promptly, and ensuring a high level of satisfaction.
- Maintain constant situational awareness of weather forecasts, water levels, and navigational hazards to ensure the safety of the vessel and all persons aboard.
- Execute emergency procedures with confidence and precision, including man-overboard, fire, and medical emergencies, as outlined in the safety management system.
- Serve as a knowledgeable local guide, sharing information about points of interest, local wildlife, and the history of the waterway to enhance the guest experience.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on engines, generators, HVAC systems, and other onboard mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment.
- Uphold the pristine condition of the vessel's interior and exterior, overseeing and assisting with detailed cleaning and sanitation between guest charters.
- Manage the vessel's inventory of fuel, fresh water, and waste, coordinating refueling and pump-out services efficiently and in an environmentally responsible manner.
- Maintain accurate and detailed vessel logs, including navigation records, engine hours, fuel consumption, maintenance performed, and incident reports.
- Ensure all onboard safety equipment, such as life jackets, PFDs, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits, is present, properly stowed, and fully operational.
- Provide expert instruction and assistance to guests on the proper and safe use of onboard amenities, such as water slides, hot tubs, and barbecue grills.
Secondary Functions
- Assist the marina and operations team with the launching, hauling, and repositioning of fleet vessels as directed by the Fleet Manager.
- Collaborate with the guest services team to prepare vessels for charter, ensuring all personalized requests, provisions, and special arrangements are correctly staged.
- Report any significant mechanical failures, vessel damage, or safety concerns to the Fleet Manager promptly and with detailed, clear documentation.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and safety training, including CPR, First Aid, and advanced vessel handling courses to maintain peak proficiency.
- Monitor and manage onboard communication systems, including VHF radio, to maintain professional contact with the home base, other vessels, and marine authorities.
- Uphold company standards for professional appearance and conduct at all times, representing the brand with integrity, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude.
- Assist in the winterization and de-winterization processes for the houseboat fleet at the beginning and end of each operating season.
- Provide constructive feedback to management on vessel performance, guest feedback, and potential improvements to operational procedures and the guest experience.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Vessel Handling: Expert proficiency in small vessel handling, including docking in tight slips, close-quarters maneuvering, and anchoring in various conditions.
- Marine Systems Maintenance: Strong mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and performing routine maintenance on marine engines (gas/diesel), generators, and plumbing systems.
- Maritime Navigation: Comprehensive knowledge of maritime navigation rules (Rules of the Road) and inland buoyage systems.
- Marine Electronics: Competency in reading and interpreting nautical charts, weather reports, and using marine electronics such as GPS, chart plotters, depth sounders, and VHF radios.
- Licensing & Certification: Possession of a valid Boating License/Certification as required by local and federal regulations (e.g., USCG Captain's License).
- Safety & First Response: Current First Aid and CPR/AED certification is mandatory.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Experience Requirements
Typical Experience Range:
2-5 years of relevant marine experience operating powered vessels.
Preferred:
Verifiable experience as a captain or primary operator of vessels of a similar size and type (25ft+). Prior experience in a customer-facing role within the hospitality, tourism, or charter boat industry is highly desirable.
