Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, execute, and lead a diverse range of qualitative and mixed-methods research studies, including in-depth interviews, contextual inquiries, ethnographic studies, and focus groups.
  • Independently plan and conduct end-to-end usability testing sessions, from recruitment and moderation to analysis and a readout of findings, to evaluate product designs and user flows.
  • Analyze large-scale quantitative data sets using SQL and statistical tools to identify behavioral patterns, user segments, and key product interaction trends.
  • Synthesize complex information from multiple data sources (e.g., analytics, surveys, interviews, support tickets) into a cohesive and holistic understanding of the user experience.
  • Translate raw data and research findings into compelling, persuasive narratives, user personas, journey maps, and actionable recommendations for product and design teams.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners, including Product Managers, UX/UI Designers, and Engineers, to embed user insights directly into the product development lifecycle.
  • Present research plans, methodologies, and key findings to a wide range of stakeholders, from individual contributors to executive leadership, ensuring clarity and impact.
  • Develop and manage a strategic research roadmap that aligns with key business objectives and proactively identifies opportunities for impactful user-centric improvements.
  • Champion rigorous, ethical research practices across the organization, ensuring participant privacy and data integrity are maintained at all times.
  • Act as the primary advocate for the user within product teams, using data and stories to ensure design decisions are grounded in genuine user needs and goals.
  • Develop and deploy large-scale surveys to measure user sentiment, satisfaction (NPS/CSAT), and specific attitudinal metrics over time.
  • Explore and analyze unstructured data from sources like customer reviews, social media, and open-ended feedback to uncover emergent themes and pain points.
  • Create and maintain a centralized, accessible repository of research insights and user knowledge that empowers the entire organization to make data-informed decisions.
  • Mentor junior analysts and researchers, providing guidance on research methodology, analysis techniques, and effective communication of insights.
  • Continuously monitor and evaluate industry trends, best practices, and emerging tools in human-computer interaction, data analysis, and qualitative research.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc data requests and exploratory data analysis to quickly answer emergent questions from business and product leaders.
  • Contribute to the organization's data strategy and roadmap by identifying new data sources and instrumentation requirements needed to better understand human behavior.
  • Collaborate with business units to translate ambiguous data needs and high-level questions into specific, testable hypotheses and engineering requirements.
  • Participate in sprint planning, retrospectives, and other agile ceremonies within the data and product teams to ensure research is timely and well-integrated.
  • Facilitate ideation workshops and collaborative design sessions with cross-functional teams to brainstorm solutions based on research findings.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Qualitative Research Methods: Expertise in a variety of methods such as semi-structured interviews, contextual inquiry, ethnography, card sorting, and diary studies.
  • Quantitative Analysis: Proficiency in querying and manipulating data with SQL and performing statistical analysis using Python (Pandas, SciPy) or R.
  • Data Visualization: Ability to create clear and impactful charts, dashboards, and reports using tools like Tableau, Looker, Power BI, or Matplotlib/Seaborn.
  • Survey & Testing Platforms: Experience designing, launching, and analyzing studies with tools like Qualtrics, SurveyMonkey, UserTesting.com, or Maze.
  • Qualitative Data Analysis Software: Familiarity with tools for organizing and coding qualitative data, such as Dovetail, NVivo, or ATLAS.ti.
  • A/B Testing: Solid understanding of experimental design, implementation, and statistical analysis for A/B and multivariate tests.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. in a field that provides a strong foundation in human behavior and research methods.

Relevant Fields of Study:

  • Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Psychology, Cognitive Science
  • Sociology, Anthropology, Information Science, Data Science, Statistics

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-7+ years of professional experience in a user research, data analysis, or related role.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience working within an agile, product-driven technology company (SaaS, e-commerce, or mobile).
  • A strong portfolio showcasing a history of conducting mixed-methods research that had a measurable impact on product outcomes.
