Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Develop detailed HVAC system designs, including ductwork, piping, and equipment layouts, from conceptual sketches to final construction documents using Revit and AutoCAD.
- Perform comprehensive heating and cooling load calculations using industry-standard software like Trane TRACE or Carrier HAP to accurately size equipment.
- Select appropriate HVAC equipment, such as air handling units, chillers, boilers, and VAV boxes, based on project specifications, performance requirements, and energy efficiency goals.
- Design and lay out ductwork and hydronic piping systems, ensuring proper sizing, routing, and coordination with other building systems like structural and electrical.
- Create and manage detailed HVAC construction drawings, schedules, specifications, and other technical documentation required for permitting and construction.
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant building codes, industry standards (e.g., ASHRAE 62.1, 90.1), and local jurisdictional requirements.
- Collaborate closely with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers, and plumbing designers to integrate the mechanical design and resolve spatial conflicts.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary coordination meetings, utilizing Navisworks or other clash detection software to identify and resolve design interferences.
- Prepare detailed control diagrams and sequences of operation to ensure the HVAC system functions as intended and meets the building's operational needs.
- Review and respond to contractor submittals, shop drawings, and Requests for Information (RFIs) during the construction administration phase.
- Conduct site visits and field surveys to verify existing conditions, monitor construction progress, and ensure installation aligns with design documents.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, feasibility studies, and cost estimates for proposed HVAC systems and modifications.
- Apply principles of sustainable design to develop energy-efficient systems that may contribute to green building certifications like LEED.
- Size and select ancillary components including pumps, fans, air devices, and hydronic specialties to complete system designs.
- Perform static pressure calculations for duct systems to ensure proper fan selection and airflow distribution throughout the building.
- Develop detailed plans, sections, and schematics to clearly communicate design intent to all project stakeholders.
- Revise and update existing drawings to reflect design changes, field conditions, and as-built information.
- Assist project managers in defining project scope, developing design schedules, and managing the design budget.
- Evaluate and recommend new HVAC technologies and materials to improve system performance, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability.
- Prepare ventilation calculations to ensure compliance with indoor air quality (IAQ) standards as per ASHRAE 62.1.
