The HVAC Install Helper is a foundational role within our field operations team, serving as the primary support for Lead Installers. This position is all about hands-on learning and hard work, providing the muscle and assistance needed to ensure that residential and light commercial HVAC systems are installed safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards. More than just an assistant, an Install Helper is an apprentice in action, absorbing technical knowledge and trade skills daily with the goal of developing into a future lead technician. You are the critical second set of hands that transforms a complex project into a seamless execution.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Actively assist lead HVAC installation technicians in all phases of residential and commercial system installations, including equipment staging, component placement, and system testing.
  • Safely and carefully load and unload new and old HVAC equipment, tools, and materials from company vehicles to the job site, often involving heavy lifting.
  • Prepare and organize work areas by laying down drop cloths, positioning tools, and ensuring all necessary components and materials are readily accessible to the lead installer.
    ' Run, bend, and connect copper refrigerant lines between indoor and outdoor units, learning and applying proper brazing and soldering techniques under direct supervision.
  • Assist in the professional installation of various types of ductwork, including flex and rigid systems, ensuring all connections are properly sealed to guarantee optimal airflow and efficiency.
  • Support the installation of low-voltage control wiring and high-voltage electrical connections for HVAC units and thermostats, strictly adhering to safety protocols and electrical codes.
  • Physically mount and secure indoor and outdoor HVAC units, such as furnaces, air handlers, and condensers, confirming they are level, stable, and correctly positioned per manufacturer specifications.
  • Precisely drill or cut access holes in walls, ceilings, and floors to accommodate wiring, refrigerant lines, and ductwork, while minimizing impact on the property.
  • Help perform initial system startup procedures and operational checks, learning to observe and report system behavior to the lead technician.
  • Learn and assist in the proper evacuation and charging of refrigerant in new systems, using manifold gauges and recovery equipment according to EPA regulations.
  • Assemble and install sheet metal components, including plenums, filter racks, and transitions, ensuring a snug and secure fit.
  • Apply insulation materials to ductwork and refrigerant lines to prevent thermal energy loss and control condensation.

Secondary Functions

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment throughout the installation process and perform thorough cleanup of the job site upon project completion.
  • Adhere rigorously to all company, OSHA, and industry safety standards, including the consistent and correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves, glasses, and harnesses.
  • Proactively communicate with the lead installer to understand daily tasks, clarify instructions, and report any potential issues or obstacles encountered on the job.
  • Stock and maintain the company work vehicle with necessary parts, tools, and materials, reporting any inventory shortages or tool malfunctions.
  • Assist in picking up parts, equipment, and materials from supply houses as directed to prevent delays and keep the project on schedule.
    '- Responsibly remove and dispose of old equipment, packaging, and job-related debris in an environmentally sound and regulation-compliant manner.
  • Actively participate in scheduled company training sessions to build technical skills, enhance product knowledge, and stay current with industry best practices.
  • Begin to learn how to read and interpret basic installation manuals, blueprints, and wiring schematics to better understand the scope of work.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Mechanical Aptitude: A natural ability to understand how mechanical systems work and a knack for working with machinery and equipment.
  • Tool Proficiency: Experience and comfort using a variety of hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, cutters) and power tools (drills, saws, grinders).
  • Physical Strength & Stamina: Ability to consistently lift and carry heavy objects (50+ lbs), work on your feet for extended periods, and move in various positions (climbing, bending, kneeling).
  • Measurement & Math Acumen: Strong ability to read a tape measure accurately and perform basic mathematical calculations for measurements and fittings.
  • Safety Protocol Adherence: Knowledge of or willingness to quickly learn and follow fundamental job site safety practices, including fall protection and electrical safety.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate of completion from a recognized HVAC, vocational, or technical trade school.

Relevant Fields of Study:

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 0-2 years of relevant experience.

Preferred: 6+ months of hands-on experience in construction, plumbing, electrical, or a similar physically demanding trade is highly advantageous. A valid driver's license with a clean driving record is often required.
