Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Operate a wide array of conventional and CNC machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, grinders, and drill presses, to produce or repair parts for HVAC equipment.
  • Interpret complex engineering blueprints, schematics, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) specifications to determine machining operations.
  • Set up, program, and operate CNC milling and turning centers, including adjusting tool offsets, work coordinates, and control parameters to achieve precise results.
  • Utilize a full range of precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and height gauges, to verify part dimensions and ensure conformance to strict tolerances.
  • Fabricate custom, one-off, or obsolete parts for emergency repairs on critical HVAC systems like chillers, boilers, and large air handling units.
  • Perform intricate machining operations on a variety of materials common in the HVAC industry, such as stainless steel, aluminum, brass, bronze, and specialized alloys.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical failures in HVAC components, such as worn shafts, damaged fan blades, or broken brackets, and determine the best machining approach for repair.
  • Calculate dimensions, speeds, feeds, and tolerances using advanced shop mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry, to plan machining processes effectively.
  • Select, align, and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines for optimal and safe operation.
  • Monitor machine operations to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance conditions, making necessary adjustments to controls to maintain quality and prevent damage.
  • Execute finishing operations such as deburring, grinding, sanding, and polishing on machined parts to ensure proper fit, function, and surface finish.
  • Collaborate directly with HVAC service technicians and engineers to understand repair needs and provide input on the design and feasibility of custom-machined solutions.
  • Perform reverse engineering on failed components when drawings are not available, taking precise measurements to create a functional replacement part.
  • Maintain cutting tools and tooling by sharpening, replacing, or reconditioning them to ensure they meet performance standards for precision work.

Secondary Functions

  • Conduct routine and preventative maintenance on all machine shop equipment to ensure operational readiness, safety, and longevity.
  • Maintain a meticulously clean and organized work area, adhering to 5S principles and all company and OSHA safety regulations to prevent accidents.
  • Document all work performed, including dimensions of finished parts, machine settings, and time required, in maintenance logs or a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Assist in the assembly and disassembly of large HVAC equipment during major repairs or overhauls, providing machining support as needed.
  • Manage the inventory of raw materials, tooling, and shop supplies, and create requisitions for new stock to avoid production delays.
  • Participate in continuous improvement projects aimed at enhancing shop efficiency, reducing material waste, and improving the quality of machined parts.
  • Provide technical guidance and share knowledge with apprentices or other technicians to foster skill development within the team.
  • Stay current with new machining technologies, tooling advancements, and industry best practices through ongoing training and professional development.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • CNC Machining: Proficiency in setting up, programming (G-code/M-code), and operating CNC lathes and mills.
  • Manual Machining: Expertise in operating conventional lathes, milling machines, surface grinders, and drill presses.
  • Blueprint Reading & GD&T: The ability to read and interpret complex technical drawings, including weld symbols and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Precision Measurement (Metrology): Mastery of precision measuring tools like calipers, micrometers, dial indicators, and height gauges to inspect parts to tight tolerances.
  • CAD/CAM Software: Familiarity with computer-aided design or manufacturing software (e.g., SolidWorks, AutoCAD, Mastercam) for viewing models or generating toolpaths.
  • Shop Mathematics: Strong application of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra for calculating dimensions, tapers, and tool paths.
  • Machine Maintenance: Knowledge of routine preventative maintenance and basic troubleshooting for machine tools.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Machine Tool Technology, CNC Machining, or a similar discipline.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range: 3-10 years of hands-on experience as a machinist in an industrial maintenance, job shop, or manufacturing environment.

Preferred: Direct experience fabricating and repairing parts specifically for industrial HVAC equipment, rotating machinery (pumps, fans, compressors), or in a field service support role is highly desirable.
